Product Management Interview questions from your work experience

There are lot of articles / videos / courses on different product management interview areas such as product design/ estimation / metrics / strategy / behavioural / technical etc.

But we hardly find any framework on what can be asked from our own work experience or products/features we have built.

From my interview experiences I have collected a few areas and I prepare stories related to my features using this framework/set of questions. Please feel free to share any other questions which you feel are relevant.

Product Discovery

? What have you actually done/built ? Tell me any one feature you have worked on and what have you done ?

? What was the problem and how did you find it ? How did you decide what to build ? (Product Discovery)

? Who were the customers/users ? (Personas/target group)

? What was the user's pain point ? (Problem validation)

Solution & Prioritisation

? How did you arrive at the solution ? What are the steps did you take ? (Primary & Secondary research, Data Analysis, Market Trend Analysis, Competitive Analysis etc.)

? How did you decide what to build in the MVP ?

? Why did you take this approach ? Where there any alternate method ? If yes why didn't you choose them ? (This may involve experimentation like A/B testing. In this step interviewer can go down some levels deep. It is very critical that you know all the 'why's in this step.)

? How did you validate the solution i.e. whether your solution will actually solve the customer's problem ? ( The goal of user testing/validation is to understand how users experience certain products. The usability of products and services can be validated at any stage in the design process.)

? How do you handle the design of a product ? (Need to be clear about the differences between UX/UI and know about UX research techniques)

? What challenges did you face ? (Here you can also talk about conflicts with engineering team/design/technical challenge etc.) How did you resolve them ?

? What were the NFR or non-functional requirements in your feature ? (security, reliability, performance, maintainability, scalability, and usability.)

? How do you prioritise your features ?

Impact Measurement/Success Metrics

? How did you measure the impact/ success of the product ? (This is super critical. Talk about very specific success metrics and KPIs. Do not give generic metrics.)

? How did you measure those metrics ? Did you get every metric from the system ? (Now for some metrics like % reduction in administrative time/cost, you may not have the data in your system. These can come from your [beta] customers only)

? Now if you want to rebuild the feature will you want to do it differently ? If yes, how ? (You need to prepare the pros/cons or points of failure of your feature)

Technical

? Tell me the tech stack and system design of your feature ? ( Only in some technical rounds it can be asked. You may need to prepare about microservices vs monolithic, REST API etc. You should at least know the entire tech stack)

? How did you handle post production release issues ?

Stakeholder management

? How do you communicate with engineers/QA ? Did you have any conflict during this feature ?

? With which stakeholders do you interact ? Tell us the process of documentation you follow with other stakeholders ?

Product Launch

? What product launch activities did you do ?
