Product hierarchies
Illustrative product hierarchies for a general merchandise retailer.

Product hierarchies

A Product MDM solution should support the association of multiple product hierarchies to a product.

  • Primary Hierarchy (only one)
  • Secondary / Alternate Hierarchies (Business specific)? (multiple)

As a minimum, the merchandise financial and ecommerce should be supported.

A variable number of multiple levels in product hierarchies should be supported.

The solution should support relationships between Primary and Alternate hierarchies.

Business rules automation should enable the assignment of hierarchies.

Inheritance attributions based on product categories should be supported. As an example, all products under the category inherit the same product owners, as well as the same values for certain attributes. These attributes can be changed at any level for the item, if the inherited value is not desired.

Finally, a good product MDM solution keeps a history of product hierarchy assignment, so that movement in the hierarchy can be tracked.
