The producer: balancing the creative and the clinical

The producer: balancing the creative and the clinical

Most people working on a set fall into two categories: the creatives and the techies. In the former camp are the writers, actors and directors, while the latter is where you’ll find grips, gaffers and PAs. Whilst the creative team come up with the ideas that excite audiences, the technical team use their skills and knowledge to deliver that vision.

However one position straddles that divide, and requires an ability to be both technical and creative: the producer. This person has to master the expressive and functional sides of filmmaking. While such skills may seem at odds with one another, the master producer can adopt some of these techniques to effortlessly alternate between a creative and a clinical frame of mind.

First thing’s first: it’s crucial that the producer is involved in every step of the creative process so that they are able to craft into a realistic plan. Writers should be encouraged to come up with ambitious and divergent ideas — but it’s up to the producer to spot where budgetary or other restraints will prevent them from happening. Similar discussions should take place with directors and, depending on the scale of the project, possibly with heads of other technical departments too.

The producer must ensure there are as few surprises as possible when filming starts. Small problems can turn into major headaches if not addressed at the scriptwriting stage. This means retaining a sense of realism about what can be accomplished without watering down the ambitions of the production. That is the key balance in filmmaking production.

Nonetheless it is equally important to ensure that the business considerations do not take over the creative process. No creative should be a slave to economics, and no producer can afford to switch off their artistic spark. If someone from the creative half of the room proposes something that is unfeasible, it isn’t the producer’s job to dismiss is out of hand; rather, alternatives should be considered, suggested, and discussed.

Finally, a good producer must never forget to utilise the talent of their colleagues. Filmmaking is a collaborative medium and ploughing a lonely furrow is a sure fire way to inhibit the potential of your product. Yes, perhaps the director’s ideas can be unrealistic from time to time, and sure, maybe some of the technical team don’t always see the bigger picture. But the producer is here to work with them – and vice versa. Their expertise is invaluable and the set is populated with such talent for a reason. So any producer struggling with reconciling a creative option with a business constraint should not kill the idea – they should talk it over with colleagues, come up with innovative solutions, and accomplish the sort of results that do their project justice.
