Procrastination is a HABIT

Hey there,?

Procrastination is a habit.

So, continuing February’s content theme where I’m talking a lot about habits, let’s talk about procrastination.

?? Procrastination occurs when you don’t take action to do the things you need to do in order to achieve your goals - it’s avoidance behaviour.

Procrastination is not the same as laziness.

It is a coping mechanism, a trauma response and if repeated regularly a habit.

And like all unhelpful habits procrastination can be self-defeating and self-sabotaging.

??Remember habits are formed when neural pathways are created in your mind and embedded within your subconscious.

??Every time you do or don’t do something a new neural pathway is created within the brain. And when these behaviours are repeated that's when habits are formed.

??That’s why habits are so easy to make and so hard to break.

Signs you might be procrastinating include:-

?? You regularly make excuses for not starting important tasks

?? You get distracted easily from completing important tasks

?? You avoid making decisions

?? You delay having important conversations

?? You need a sense of pressure to take action

?? You avoid confrontation and difficult conversations

?? If you have a deadline you wait until the last minute to complete the task

?? You struggle to focus on any one task at a time and hop from task to task

?? You re-read and re-write emails several times before sending them

?? You avoid asking for help when you need it

Procrastination might just therefore be what’s holding you back in your Life and Career.

BUT…

?? With a CEO Mindset you will not procrastinate.

?? When you are the CEO of your Life and Career you will take intentional action towards your goals and dreams every day no matter how scary.

? Top Tip #1 - If you find yourself procrastinating regularly, ask yourself this: “What’s the worst thing that will happen if I do the thing I have been putting off?”

? Top Tip #2 - As soon as you set yourself new goals and the initial excitement wears off you get overwhelmed. This is because the subconscious mind always wants to choose the easier path, to keep you in the familiar which it deems safe.

??The key to overcoming overwhelm is to keep yourself in the excitement phase. The feeling of excitement is created when dopamine is released in your body, and dopamine is released when you take ACTION.

? This is one of the reasons why my 1:1 coaching clients find my rolling monthly PAYG coaching packages so helpful because they keep you accountable so you can stop procrastinating and take actionable steps towards your goals. ??

? Top Tip #3 - sometimes the thought of taking action is just too big. And when this happens it can be helpful to break the goal down into small steps so you can take tiny actions towards your goals every day.
