Procrastination is the Grave in which Opportunity is Buried.
Author Alyce P. Cornyn-Selby hit the nail on the head when she said, "Procrastination is, hands down, our favourite form of self-sabotage."
Many of my clients struggle with procrastination, which acts as a roadblock on their path to achieving their goals. This often triggers a negative cycle of self-criticism, impacting their self-esteem. This, in turn, diminishes their motivation and perpetuates the pattern of procrastination in various aspects of their lives.
When we repeatedly engage in an action, even if it's counterproductive, there's often a hidden benefit or secondary gain. A recent client had a lightbulb moment when they realised that they did not want to overcome their procrastination tendencies because doing so would mean sacrificing the praise and sense of importance they received when they would come in as the 'hero' at the eleventh hour. Despite the costs of not meeting deadlines, including the toll on their mental health, the unconscious desire for recognition was a powerful motivator for their actions.
If you find yourself struggling with procrastination, I invite you to reflect on these questions to help reveal the hidden motivations and secondary gains that fuel your self-sabotaging behaviour.
