PROCRASTINATION

Tayo had a knack for putting off making decisions, plans or other activities until the last minute. Down to his alarm every morning, he would always push his actions forward. He could make up his mind to read and then decide to do it later because he got distracted by a notification on social media, only to realize hours later that he had not read as he had planned. He had lost count of how many times he had missed and failed to meet the deadline on his assigned tasks. These actions of deferring to a later time deeply affected him academically and in his relationships because of broken promises.
?
20% of adults are chronic procrastinators, Ferrari, (2022). To Sirois (2022), Procrastination has a lot to do with our emotional self-regulation, especially our inability to manage negative moods around a specific task. Devi and Dhull (2017) believe it exists in 6 stages: false security, laziness, excuses, denial, and crisis. Even though they are frustrated, they still repeat the process.
?
Procrastination can impede success, influence an individual's mood, and increase anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem (Duru & Balkis, 2017). it is the irrational tendency to delay required tasks or assignments despite the adverse effects of this postponement on individuals and organizations (Klingsieck, 2013). Despite knowing that one would be worse off for delaying actions, tasks, activities or plans, Procrastination makes it possible for people to voluntarily postpone an intended course of action.
?
One major misconception about Procrastination is that it is a harmless habit that some people think could be helpful (Jaffe, 2013). To some, what matters is completing tasks rather than how long it takes. Others believe they work best under pressure while, in truth, they are suffering more and performing less. Most times, people who procrastinate know that this behaviour is harmful to them but still do it even if they want to stop.
?
People procrastinate because their drive to delay is irrationally stronger than their drive to act. Their self-control and motivation are weakened by issues like exhaustion as opposed to fear. Shatz (2023) itemizes the reason for Procrastination as distractions, prioritization of short-term mood, task aversiveness, anxiety and fear, feeling overwhelmed, perfectionism and low motivation, among others, as the reasons people procrastinate.
?
Overcoming Procrastination gives individuals an undue advantage because exercising discipline and self-control over our senses or feelings at a particular point shows how mentally fit or capable we are.
