Introduction

Over the past 30 years, I have worked at the intersection of Process Innovation and Technology in Aero & Defense, Manufacturing, Energy and CLIA and FDA-regulated industries such as Molecular Labs and Life Sciences. During this time, I have been hands-on in the evolution of technology-enabled business process management, spanning from MRP, ERP, CRM, MES, QMS, to RPA systems.

In these past few decades, technology has continuously promised to elevate human productivity by automating repetitive and mundane tasks, thereby enabling individuals to focus on more valuable and creative work. Software and robotics have significantly contributed to this transformation, particularly through the advent of Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Companies like UiPath and Blue Prism emerged as leaders by automating basic, repetitive tasks. However, the limitations of RPA, such as high setup costs, brittle execution, and burdensome maintenance, have hindered its ability to tackle more complex processes. This has left a vast array of repetitive tasks still performed manually, indicating a significant opportunity for further innovation and improvement.

Example Case: Traditional AI-ML with RPA

I worked with a national human tissue processing organization where we initially had to use a combination of cumbersome systems to achieve RPA automation for medical forms processing. Each month, a person had to unpack tens of thousands of forms from incoming mail and scan them into a system that used Kofax to place the digitized forms into a shared folder. Then, UiPath's RPA bot would access the folder, extract both typed and handwritten text, and feed it to a Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm I developed on Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio. MS Azure would provide a CSV file export that the UiPath RPA bot would pick up and import into an aggregated Excel spreadsheet containing all the typed and handwritten form fields. This process reduced data entry time from 90 seconds to about 12 seconds, but it was only 40% accurate, leading us to shut down the pilot.

Fast forward four years to today, and I believe we could now integrate GenAI LLMs with a workflow outlined by ProcessPro and Intelligent RPA to achieve 85-90% accuracy for about 70% of the medical forms.

Examples: Emerging LLM Workflow Automation at Tennr and Stanford

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI reasoning with company's like Andreessen Horowitz-backed Tennr herald a new era in process improvement and automation. Unlike traditional RPA, which struggles with unstructured data and tasks requiring nuanced judgment, LLMs possess the capability to handle these complexities with greater flexibility and accuracy. Research, such as the ECLAIR project at Stanford University , demonstrates how multimodal foundation models can learn from human demonstrations and written documentation to automate intricate workflows with minimal human supervision. This new approach promises to democratize process improvement and unlock unprecedented productivity gains, setting new standards for what automation can achieve and paving the way for the next generation of Digital Transformation and Enterprise Workflow Automation tools.

We are now transitioning from rules-based coding of these systems to LLMs and multi-modal Foundation Models . These advancements allow Business Process Owners, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and Consultants with no coding experience to map, analyze, optimize workflows in ways never before possible. GenAI-powered ProcessPro , working alongside Silicon Valley AI tech startups like Tennr and Intelligent RPA incumbents, will create the next-generation Business Process Management and Automation platforms. These innovations can make work more enjoyable and productive by freeing up workers from rote tasks and enabling them to focus on higher-value-added work facilitated by AI. As the saying goes, "AI won't take your job but someone using AI will."
