Introduction
Over the past 30 years, I have worked at the intersection of Process Innovation and Technology in Aero & Defense, Manufacturing, Energy and CLIA and FDA-regulated industries such as Molecular Labs and Life Sciences. During this time, I have been hands-on in the evolution of technology-enabled business process management, spanning from MRP, ERP, CRM, MES, QMS, to RPA systems.
In these past few decades, technology has continuously promised to elevate human productivity by automating repetitive and mundane tasks, thereby enabling individuals to focus on more valuable and creative work. Software and robotics have significantly contributed to this transformation, particularly through the advent of Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Companies like UiPath and Blue Prism emerged as leaders by automating basic, repetitive tasks. However, the limitations of RPA, such as high setup costs, brittle execution, and burdensome maintenance, have hindered its ability to tackle more complex processes. This has left a vast array of repetitive tasks still performed manually, indicating a significant opportunity for further innovation and improvement.
Example Case: Traditional AI-ML with RPA
I worked with a national human tissue processing organization where we initially had to use a combination of cumbersome systems to achieve RPA automation for medical forms processing. Each month, a person had to unpack tens of thousands of forms from incoming mail and scan them into a system that used Kofax to place the digitized forms into a shared folder. Then, UiPath's RPA bot would access the folder, extract both typed and handwritten text, and feed it to a Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm I developed on Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio. MS Azure would provide a CSV file export that the UiPath RPA bot would pick up and import into an aggregated Excel spreadsheet containing all the typed and handwritten form fields. This process reduced data entry time from 90 seconds to about 12 seconds, but it was only 40% accurate, leading us to shut down the pilot.
Fast forward four years to today, and I believe we could now integrate GenAI LLMs with a workflow outlined by ProcessPro and Intelligent RPA to achieve 85-90% accuracy for about 70% of the medical forms.
Examples: Emerging LLM Workflow Automation at Tennr and Stanford
Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI reasoning with company's like Andreessen Horowitz-backed Tennr herald a new era in process improvement and automation. Unlike traditional RPA, which struggles with unstructured data and tasks requiring nuanced judgment, LLMs possess the capability to handle these complexities with greater flexibility and accuracy. Research, such as the ECLAIR project at Stanford University , demonstrates how multimodal foundation models can learn from human demonstrations and written documentation to automate intricate workflows with minimal human supervision. This new approach promises to democratize process improvement and unlock unprecedented productivity gains, setting new standards for what automation can achieve and paving the way for the next generation of Digital Transformation and Enterprise Workflow Automation tools.
We are now transitioning from rules-based coding of these systems to LLMs and multi-modal Foundation Models . These advancements allow Business Process Owners, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and Consultants with no coding experience to map, analyze, optimize workflows in ways never before possible. GenAI-powered ProcessPro , working alongside Silicon Valley AI tech startups like Tennr and Intelligent RPA incumbents, will create the next-generation Business Process Management and Automation platforms. These innovations can make work more enjoyable and productive by freeing up workers from rote tasks and enabling them to focus on higher-value-added work facilitated by AI. As the saying goes, "AI won't take your job but someone using AI will."
ProcessPro is a cutting-edge GenAI-powered Business Process Management (BPM) platform that can connect process improvement and problem-solving to workflow pain points. It serves as a comprehensive Knowledge Management Hub, integrating process maps, Policies, Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions, and more. By leveraging Generative AI (GenAI) technology, ProcessPro jumpstarts process creation and equips AI agents with planning and chain-of-thought reasoning capabilities. This significantly reduces AI hallucinations, enhancing the robustness of Enterprise large language models (LLMs) as part of an innovative Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) approach. This new approach to Robotic Process Automation through prompting LLMs represents an innovative breakthrough, democratizing process improvement and innovation for Business Process Owners and SMEs.
History of Process Mapping and Continuous Improvement
Early Beginnings
Evolution of Process Mapping Tools
As noted by Forrester and others, BPM has transitioned to Digital Process Automation (DPA). DPA extends BPM by incorporating advanced digital technologies to streamline and automate specific tasks within processes. Technologies like robotic process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) are utilized to enhance efficiency, reduce manual effort, and improve user experience. DPA aims for rapid implementation and immediate benefits, focusing on automating individual tasks within the broader BPM framework.

Complexity in Process Mapping and Automation
Challenges with heavily over-engineered and code-intensive process mapping and automation solutions (DPA and BPM) have made it difficult for organizations to implement and maintain effective process maps, leading to inefficiencies and increased costs. Furthermore, the lack of user-friendly visual tools and an overreliance on rigid, rules-based coding exacerbate these issues. This highlights the need for simplification in process mapping and automation tools.
Perhaps, leveraging large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering, which utilize natural human language, can offer a more intuitive and flexible approach to process automation, reducing complexity, engaging workers and enhancing overall efficiency.

ProcessPro and Tennr Case Studies and Testimonials
Case Study: iSleep's Growth with Tennr Automation
Background (Source; Tennr.com)
iSleep HST, based in Reno, Nevada, provides sleep apnea testing and devices to Americans struggling with sleep apnea. Their operations involve significant logistical challenges and are labor-intensive, from processing new patients to managing renewals.
Pain Points
iSleep faced severe operational constraints due to their reliance on manual processes. Six full-time employees were required for referral intake, leading to a backlog of manual work and delays in sending devices to new patients. This dependency on manual labor limited iSleep's ability to scale.
The Challenge
With rapid expansion across the USA, iSleep struggled to balance processing speed and accuracy. The increased volume of referrals led to manual bottlenecks, resulting in slower and less satisfactory patient experiences.
The Solution: Tennr
iSleep implemented Tennr, an end-to-end automation tool designed to parse incoming referrals and upload data to back-office systems, while keeping a human in the loop when necessary. Tennr stood out as a solution that required no headcount increase or migration costs, maintaining the involvement of specialists as needed.
Life with Tennr
After adopting Tennr, referral intake became the responsibility of a single person, primarily focused on follow-up tasks. This allowed iSleep to reorganize their workforce, redeploying employees previously handling referral intake to follow-on patient coordination. As a result, iSleep improved the processing speed for new patients and enhanced care for existing ones.
Outcomes
Tennr Summary
Tennr fundamentally transformed iSleep's operations, allowing them to grow and improve patient care without the need for additional hires. This case study demonstrates the impact of automation on enhancing scalability and operational efficiency in a logistically challenging industry.
