PROC SQL Programming Masterclass Using SAS?

Kirk Paul "sasNerd" Lafler is providing an in-person training class at the MidWest SAS Users Group (MWSUG) Educational Forum and Conference on November 17th, 2024 in Waukesha (suburbs of Milwaukee), Wisconsin! Kirk will provide attendees with core concepts, features, and coding techniques on how to effectively use PROC SQL in the SAS software.

Attendees in Kirk's class will learn how to:

  • Use PROC SQL to access and retrieve data in SAS datasets (tables);
  • Apply essential programming tasks including specifying SELECT statement clauses (i.e., FROM, INTO, WHERE, ON, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY);
  • Understand the execution order of the SELECT clauses;
  • Subset data with WHERE, ON and HAVING clauses;
  • Order data and results with the ORDER BY clause;
  • Group data with the GROUP BY and HAVING clauses;
  • Construct logic scenarios using case expressions;
  • Explore one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many data relationships;
  • Create inner and outer join constructs (i.e., inner and outer – left, right, and full) as well as the application of set operators to combine two or more tables together;
  • Use summary (statistical) functions to aggregate data; creating new tables using three different approaches;
  • Interface PROC SQL with the macro facility to create single-value (aggregate) and multi-value (list) macro variables;
  • Understand the strategies and techniques related to the design and implementation of simple and composite indexes;
  • Use iterative programming constructs and processes with PROC SQL and the Macro language to dynamically create data-driven programs; the application of query debugging techniques to help detect coding errors, warnings, and other issues; and the application of efficient SQL queries (scaling) for improved performance.
