Problems Require Solutions, Not More Problems

Achieving Strategic Goals by leveraging Automation and Digital Technologies in Advanced Manufacturing
Practical problem-solving strategies not only diffuse active issues but they also prevent the problems from coming back. Top performing organizations have found ways to improve processes and apply effective problem-solving approach continuously. Try to eliminate any problems as soon as possible even before they occur, therefore creating a continuous improvement culture.
Practical Problem Solving Strategy - PPSS
- Problem Identification, Face Reality - do not ignore it, accept that you have a real problem or issue. Do not fool yourself that it may go away in time.
- Gather input from others and don't be afraid to ask for help. People like problem solving and brainstorming ideas. Identify the root cause of the problem you are facing.
- Do not make the problem a bigger problem than it really is. Many times we can overstate the size or impact of a problem which causes more stress making the situation even worse.
- Do not over engineer or complicate the problem. Simplify and reduce it into workable segments so you can divide and delegate work leading to the solution.
- Create a positive force or energy behind your team so you become part of the solution. Every problem has a solution and you must remain focused until you select the appropriate solution.
- Every problem is a lesson to be learned. Turn the resolution process into an opportunity by documenting variables and wildcards along the way.
If the problem is still there, then its back to the group brainstorming step for further analysis, and repeat the process again.
Depending upon the level of complexity of your problem, there are several problem solving strategies you can use: Six Sigma Tools, 5 Whys, TQM Tools, FMEA, Lean Manufacturing Principles, Fishbone Diagram, Kepner Tregoe Problem solving, 5 Step Approach. By enforcing the process of continuously striving to identify and eliminate problems means that you are effectively using problem solving strategies to stay most competitive and efficient.
