Problems with overcommitting? Yep, me too.

Problems with overcommitting? Yep, me too.

As we get closer and closer to the Long Haul Leader Summit in November (grab your ticket here, there aren't many left!), I've been thinking a LOT about leadership in general, but zooming in on where focus comes into play in today's fast-paced, non-stop world.

Leaders aren’t inherently more likely to lose focus than anyone else—it’s human nature. And it often stems from the best intentions: wanting to do more, be more, and serve more. However, when leaders lose focus, the consequences can be severe.

In leadership, the stakes are usually high, so it’s crucial to understand why we lose focus. I believe there are four key reasons.

First, most leaders fear failure. To avoid appearing vulnerable, they may focus on easy tasks, but those aren't always the most important or impactful. Often, others could handle them better. By neglecting what only you can do, you deprive the world of your greatest gifts—which, ironically, is the biggest failure of all.

When you realize that, it hits hard, right?

Second, leaders are afraid to delegate. In over twenty years of experience, I’ve seen that when tasks aren’t effectively delegated, leaders end up handling things that could be better done by someone else.

Third, overcommitting is a common trap. It’s easy to feel like we need to do everything ourselves. We say yes to too many tasks, projects, and opportunities, spreading ourselves thin. We forget that every yes is also a no to something else.

However, from the tens of thousands of hours I've spent coaching entrepreneurs, the one thing I've seen over and over again is that leaders lose focus when they micromanage.

This is especially true for entrepreneurial leaders, many of whom are type-A personalities. I’ve been guilty of this in the past but have learned to let go. Micromanaging stifles the team and keeps the leader stuck in day-to-day details, unable to see the big picture or contribute where they’re truly needed.

MY QUESTION TO YOU: You're an expert, right? A go-to industry person, serving an audience and community, I would guess.

Do you consider yourself a leader? If not, why not?
