Modern workplaces of today's world are still trying to improve their employee's health through traditional approaches, which are not effective anymore. Also, low utilisation, poor outcomes, and poorly designed incentives are the pressing problems faced by health and wellbeing initiatives in the workplace.
The Resolute Workplace Insights team has conducted a survey with leading HRs, CHROs, CXOs, and Wellbeing leaders from more than 50 organisations. The survey data, in tandem with research data, has given us unique insights into the problems faced by today's workplaces and possible pathways to improve outcomes.

So, what are the most pressing problems faced by today's modern workplaces?
Poor mental fitness of the staff:
Mental health concerns and burnout have skyrocketed at workplaces post-pandemic. The traditional Employee Assistance Program is helpful to those are in crisis but incapable of improving the mental fitness and resilience of the employees. It is now established based on science that mental health is now a combination of many things like physical fitness, sleep, stress management, nutrition, etc.
Sub-clinical anxiety, stress, burnout, and poor sleep quality can be improved using evidence-based self-help tools along with practitioner support. Poor mental fitness is now related to low productivity and performance, poor job satisfaction, and hence retention rates.

Poorly managed health risks :
While the risk from COVID has subsided, there is a global surge in chronic diseases among the younger population. Not anymore a simple annual health screening and check could reduce health risks as it needs to be managed continuously.
Due to various reasons, including poor lifestyle choices, put a considerable portion of the workforce under health risks such as obesity, CVDs, MSK (musculoskeletal risk), and much more.
Poor engagement and utilisation of health & wellbeing benefits:
Most workplaces offer health benefits including, insurance, infirmaries, health checks, and gym memberships. It is apparent that the leadership team is struggling with poor utilisation of the benefits offered. The complication lies in the workforce's engagement and utilisation of the health benefits provided.
There are various reasons such as benefits not matching with the values and goals of the individuals, one size fits all offers, not addressing all aspects of wellbeing, superficial contests, events & webinars, etc.
Family health:
During the pandemic, most workplaces extended health benefits not just to their staff but to their families as well. The health status of the family members has a direct impact on the employees. It includes financial benefits like insurance coverage, access to care through telemedicine subscriptions, etc.
Also, an employee cannot be productive if his primary concern is around his family member's health. Workplaces are predominantly hybrid now, and staff spends most of their time at home. A cohesive health and wellbeing for the entire family will bring the desired outcomes and high employee satisfaction.
Bottomline
The problems mentioned above cannot be solved by present-day wellbeing solutions. It requires new-age solutions, which are relevant to today's workplace and workforce. We will brief that in an upcoming post.
