The problem with websites

Yesterday was crap. Really crap. I had a bad day (and no don’t worry I’m not going to start singing!).
It started with me trying to upload a blog post that was a video my 11 year old daughter had made and spent ages creating on how you can convert your Twitter data into an infographic – you can watch the video here.
The day progressed with attempting to fix the plugin with a lot of “toing and froing” with my web developer and the WordPress theme support. Both of which were incredibly time consuming and frustrating. Finally I thought I had a result as the WordPress theme offered to log in and fix it! BIG mistake as instantly my site went down and deleted it - together with 15 other websites that are hosted on the same server. Nightmare!
Anyway, the day ended with my site still not being up (and it’s still down now as I write this!) and lots of people being very frustrated and pissed off.
So my day was pretty much spent liaising with my web developer and trying to research what the problem could be (there was my first mistake, I’m not a web developer so not quite sure why I was thinking I could fix it when I know nothing about code!).
It’s interesting writing this now as in hindsight (which is a wonderful thing!) it doesn’t seem that bad. But at the time, OMG – it feels like a nightmare! The stress and the impact on losing business (which let’s put into perspective, it’s 24 -48 hours, I don’t sell anything physical on my site and if someone really wants to get in touch with me I’m plastered all over the web so they could in theory easily find me!)
Running a business and the life of an entrepreneur is so up and down. We all have bad days; the idea is to have more good days than bad! It really is like a rollercoaster. How you deal with those bad days is what counts and makes the next day better.
Last night I went to bed feeling crappy. BUT, I asked myself how can I make tomorrow better. So today I’ve woken up with a spring in my step. My website is still down… it’s not ideal but I’m not going to let it affect how my day progresses. I’m not going to let it affect my productivity (so much so that I did the washing at 7am this morning – trust me I barely do the washing, let alone at 7am in the morning!!)
I’m blocking out today to focus on creating content and am going to let my web developer work his magic at fixing it whilst I work my own magic :)
To quote Joel Osteen “Just because we’re in a stressful situation doesn’t mean we have to get stressed out. You may be in the storm. The key is, don’t let the storm get in you”.
Here’s to a productive day!

8 年Oh darn. They should have at least redirected your url to a temp page explaining it was under maintenance. You should also back up your site regularly. If you don't know how they are a few plugins that do it

8 年Hi Lilach Bullock My heart goes out as I've been in exactly the same place and NEVER want to go back there. To me, the worst part was feeling so utterly helpless and as though life, the world and everything was ending. This is going back to my blogging days around 5 or 6 years ago and luckily I got over it. My old social media mate Berrie Pelser was super helpful and Bluehost were great too. Now, I'm happy to let other people do all that technical stuff for me, it's rreally not my forte. My issue back then was that my WordPress blog got hacked! Why? I'll never know! Now that I have actually got products to sell online it's 100% essential that everything works! Have a great weekend, hope you get to relax! Best Regards Peter

8 年Wise words Lilach Bullock - when the tech goes wrong we are essentially powerless which is a painful place to be for sole operators who presume we must be able to do EVERYTHING. Hence you trying to fix it. I will be trying to follow your example and create content the next time my site goes down - rather than stare gloomily at the error code 150 times!
