Rousseau and many others warned us.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in his critiques of progress and civilization, warned that technological and societal advancements, when pursued without wisdom and moral reflection, could lead to unintended and often detrimental consequences. Rousseau believed that the pursuit of progress, particularly through the sciences and the arts, could corrupt human virtue and create new forms of dependency, alienation, and inequality, all while presenting the illusion of liberation.

Rousseau’s Critique of Progress:

  • Dependency and Alienation: Rousseau argued that as societies become more technologically advanced, individuals become increasingly dependent on artificial needs and institutions. This dependence undermines self-sufficiency and fosters alienation from one’s natural state, leading to social fragmentation and a loss of authentic human connection.
  • False Liberation: While progress appears to provide more freedom and convenience, Rousseau contended that it often enslaves individuals to new social structures and power dynamics. What is perceived as liberation, through economic and technological development, may instead result in deeper entrenchment in systemic inequalities and loss of personal agency.
  • Moral Decay: According to Rousseau, technological advancement fosters superficiality and a focus on materialism rather than virtue. He lamented the way progress diverts humanity from its original, more egalitarian and morally sound state, replacing it with competition, envy, and artificial hierarchies.

Parallel to AGI and ASI Development:

Rousseau’s concerns are highly relevant to the contemporary pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). These advanced AI systems have the potential to either enhance human flourishing or, if developed without ethical foresight, optimize for goals that could disregard fundamental human values.

  • New Dependencies and Alienation: Much like Rousseau’s critique of industrial progress, AGI could introduce new dependencies, making individuals and entire societies reliant on systems they neither fully understand nor control. For example, an AGI optimized purely for economic growth might exploit labor forces, degrade the environment, or erode social trust without considering the broader moral implications.
  • Erosion of Authentic Human Relationships: Just as Rousseau feared that progress in arts and sciences encouraged vanity and superficiality, widespread AI integration could replace genuine human interactions with artificial ones. This could deepen the crisis of loneliness and disconnection already seen in modern digital societies.

Socrates (469–399 BCE)

  • Key Concern: Loss of critical thinking and wisdom.
  • Socrates warned that the proliferation of writing and new technologies could weaken memory and true understanding, replacing deep knowledge with shallow information. This concern resonates today with the impact of digital technologies on human cognition and learning.

Francis Bacon (1561–1626)

  • Key Concern: Unchecked scientific pursuit.
  • Bacon, often regarded as the father of empiricism and the scientific method, cautioned that scientific progress should be guided by wisdom and morality to prevent the misuse of knowledge for destructive purposes.

Mary Shelley (1797–1851)

  • Key Concern: The unintended consequences of scientific ambition.
  • In her novel Frankenstein, Shelley explored the ethical implications of scientific overreach, warning of the dangers of creating technology without considering moral and societal consequences.

  • Mill emphasized that societal progress should focus not just on technological development but also on moral and intellectual growth to ensure that advancements benefit all of humanity.

  • Heidegger argued that technology shapes human existence in profound ways, often leading to an instrumental mindset that views nature and people as resources to be exploited rather than entities with intrinsic value.

Lewis Mumford (1895–1990)

  • Mumford explored how large-scale technological systems could erode human autonomy, warning against "megatechnics," where technology dominates culture, politics, and individual freedom.

Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)

  • Key Concern: Loss of human agency.
  • Arendt warned about the dehumanizing effects of bureaucratic and technological systems, arguing that they could erode human responsibility and moral accountability.

Jacques Ellul (1912–1994)

  • Key Concern: The autonomy of technology.
  • In The Technological Society, Ellul argued that once technology is introduced, it develops autonomously, often beyond human control, leading to unintended and irreversible societal changes.

Ivan Illich (1926–2002)

  • Illich critiqued how modern institutions, such as healthcare and education, become overly reliant on technological solutions, undermining human agency and traditional wisdom.

Neil Postman (1931–2003)

  • Key Concern: The erosion of critical thinking.
  • In Technopoly, Postman warned about the dangers of a society that surrenders cultural and intellectual values to technological efficiency, diminishing meaningful human engagement.

Jürgen Habermas (1929–Present)

  • Key Concern: Technocratic control.
  • Habermas cautioned against the encroachment of technological rationality into democratic discourse, arguing that it could marginalize ethical and humanistic considerations in policymaking.

Noam Chomsky (1928–Present)

  • Ethical Shortcomings: Without proper ethical frameworks, technological advancements could harm society and the environment.
  • Social and Economic Inequality: New technologies often exacerbate existing divides rather than resolve them.
  • Environmental Impact: Unchecked technological progress often leads to ecological destruction and unsustainable practices.
  • Existential Threats: Some technologies, such as AI and biotechnology, pose risks to the very survival of humanity.

All of these warnings serve as a critical reminder that while technology can drive progress, it must be developed and deployed with deep ethical considerations to ensure it aligns with humanity's long-term well-being and planetary sustainability. Technocracy tracks closely Plato's aristocracy which he meant to be government by experts. The US is about as far as is possible from technocracy... Spending money on tech doesn't make you a technocracy - you are just using technology to enhance pre-exisitng systems of oppresion.
