Problem-Solving, Talent or Skill?

Problem-Solving, Talent or Skill?

I recently received a DM on my previous article on Problem solving skill that sparked an exciting conversation: “Can problem-solving be a talent?”

The answer is YES—and here’s the fascinating part: Your talent can also become a skill.

As a StrengthsFinder (CliftonStrengths) coach for over a decade, I’ve seen how natural talents like Restorative—the strength that thrives on solving problems—can be honed into powerful, future-ready skills.

If you have Restorative in your top strengths, you’re the person who:

  • Sees problems as puzzles waiting to be solved.
  • Feels energized when faced with a challenge.
  • Takes pride in fixing things, whether it’s a broken process, a team conflict, or a complex project.

But here’s the real magic: When you consistently use your talent, it transforms into a skill.

Talent vs. Skill: What’s the Difference?

- Talent: Your natural ability to do something well. It’s innate, effortless, and energizing.

- Skill: The expertise you develop by practicing and refining that talent over time.

Think of it like this:

  • If problem-solving is your talent, you’re naturally drawn to challenges and enjoy finding solutions.
  • When you practice problem-solving consistently, you develop frameworks, strategies, and expertise that make you a go-to problem-solver in any situation.

Why Restorative is a Talent and a Skill

As a Talent: You’re naturally inclined to identify issues and fix them. It’s who you are.

As a Skill: You’ve practiced problem-solving so much that you’ve become an expert at it. You know how to diagnose problems quickly, think critically, and implement effective solutions.

The key is consistency. When you use your talent over and over again, you not only maintain the same energy and passion—you also get better at it.

How to Turn Your Talent Into a Skill

1. Awareness: Identify your natural talents. (If you haven’t discovered your Strengths, start there!)

2. Practice: Use your talent consistently in your daily life and work. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

3. Refinement: Learn frameworks, tools, and strategies to enhance your natural abilities. For example, if you’re a natural problem-solver, study design thinking or root cause analysis.

4. Deployment: Apply your talent (and newfound skill) to real-world challenges. This is where the magic happens.

"Success is Built on Strengths, Not Weaknesses"

This is a mantra I’ve lived by since I discovered my strengths and that is very empowering. When you focus on your natural talents—like Restorative and turn them into skills, you don’t just succeed; you thrive. You’re able to meet the demands of the future with confidence because you’re already wired to do what the world needs most.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether your talent can become a skill, let this be your reminder: It’s not just possible—it’s your path to mastery.
