Problem Solving

Problem Solving

I am a rugby fan. I used to play and have coached for many years. Here in the UK, the 6 Nations Championship is the highlight of the season. This year, like everything else, it has been disrupted by Covid. Several of the France squad members and officials failed one of the regular tests. This then prevented the France v Scotland fixture and the knock-ons are yet to be ironed out. Scotland and the other 4 Nations, Ireland, England, Italy and Wales are all effected through no fault of their own. There are very limited alternative dates when the France v Scotland game can be played and many other factors that could prevent a date, if one can be agreed, from being acceptable to one or both sides due to player availability. If the fixture is not played then the Championship will not be completed.

This all got me thinking about how much like business this scenario is. We have plans in place, everyone knows what they need to do and when. Then something outwith our control happens that knocks the plans off course and we struggle to react and rescue the situation. The answer? We have to be adaptable, flexible. If we can overcome the setbacks, then we are stronger going forward and will handle the next situation, because there will be one, better.

The skill of problem solving is an under-appreciated one in business. If, rather than panicking and looking for someone to blame, you can take a step back, analyse what options are, or are not, available and use what is available to reset the situation, then you are very definitely an asset to any business.

If more businesses carried out scenario planning, ie give a team a mock situation for them to solve in a given time, then our businesses would be that much more capable and ready to face the inevitable crises.

David Peace Nice article David, it is a sad truth that, certainly in the UK few SME's even have a Business Plan, a Marketing Plan or even #googleanalytics so they are #blind to the effects of the world and don't know whether what they're doing

Great message on the critical skill of Problem Solving. Thanks for sharing David.
