Be a Problem Solver, Not a Whiner

According to research, most people complain about one thing or the other every once a minute during a typical conversation. Complaining might look tempting because it feels good, but like many other enjoyable things -- such as smoking or eating a pound of sausages and bacon for breakfast -- whining isn’t good for you.

But, nobody likes whiners-- the people who always have something negative to say. Apart from this, constant complaints in the workplace also have negative implications affecting productivity, camaraderie, leadership, and culture. It’s like one bad apple spoiling the whole barrel.

So, it’s time to start packaging your complaint like a sandwich and start with a positive statement because if you’re not bringing key issues out in the open, accompanied by a solution or additional insight, then you’re just whining. Therefore, stop complaining and start being a constructive complainer while having fun solving problems.

However, you must be wondering how to have fun and become a better problem solver by complaining in the right way? Here are three easy ways to whine just right.

  1. Be positive and present your situation: Structure your complaints in a way like a sandwich is packed. Start with a positive statement, followed by your complaints and rants, and further closing it on a positive note with a solution to it. Have a clear purpose and adopt a solution-oriented approach. And this will further help the listener better understand your point of view.
  2. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude: Never criticize or complain about a situation that you created. You own it! Instead, when you feel like complaining, shift your attention to something positive happening in your life. Take time to contemplate what you’re grateful for and flood your social media with some stories, lists, and experiences of the good things that happened in your life.
  3. Power of ‘And’: It’s time for a swap. Banish the word ‘But’ and start incorporating ‘And’ in your sentences to improve your communication. When we use the word ‘but, all we’re doing is making some sort of complaint or excuse to defend our actions. It’s amazing to know that how a single word can dramatically alter the tone of our conversation.

?So, whining is not only graceless, it can be dangerous too. Stop complaining about being in dark, if you can’t learn to light the candles.
