ADAS: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, this is what we have today in the mobility world. System that help the driver with driving. This is far a way from an autonomous vehicle, that receives data from several sensors like cameras/radars/Lidar and tries to recognize it's environment. The problem is not in the hardware, the problem is, what is recognized from software AI side. What the human brain does from recognition side, is much better then any GPU+Sensors system that exists today. Computers can react much faster then humans, but, in terms of recognition there is a big problem. For example, cameras don't recognize objects in the dark, radars have their own weaknesses, also a Lidar system which costs a lot, is good for creating HD-maps, but will vehicles have Lidar system on every car ?, after all sensors which costs a lot, with a GPU will be installed, we are light years aways from recognizing all objects from sensors...
Also the human brain consumes 25 Watts of electrical power, how much does a GPU+sensors consume ?, can a 1200 neurons with static connections, learn new objects that it did not see before ? how much do all sensors+GPU cost?, The algorithms for object recognition like back propagation recognize 60-80%, of what they learned from historic data, will someone get into a car, that has a 60-80% chance of not getting into an accident ?
The solution will emerge from V2X, modems that do not consume too much electricity(<4Watts), very easy to install, even on driven vehicles, work in any weather, and can see "through" buildings using wireless communication, and will totally solve the object recognition problem.
The only problem with V2X, is that it needs to be installed in all vehicles, driven/autonomous, and will help in mixed environments of driven/autonomous vehicles.
When several vehicles have V2X and others don't, new features like platoon traffic synchronization will emerge...
The biggest problems in traffic are safety and traffic congestion, these are T$ problems, and until now the autonomous vehicle makes more accidents then humans...
