How to do effective brainstorming
We have a problem that needs a solution! Let’s all get together to brainstorm and find a solution now. Great idea besides the “small” fact that brainstorming does not work. At least not in the form it takes place throughout many organizations today.
Often typical brainstorming session is scheduled with lots of people since more the merrier. This coupled together with a loose agenda or outline, results in participants showing up unsure on what should be accomplished.
Studies dating back to the 1960’s time and again have documented that individuals are able to generate more and better ideas then what is taking place in group’s. Key reasons contributing to this startling fact:
· Adequate time is not given prior to meeting for reflection and preparation
· Ideas are not shared due to fear of not conforming with the group
· Subsequent ideas take form based on what others have already shared
· Extroverts dominate the conversation due to thriving on talking ideas out loud
· Introverts get "overwhelmed" with amount of “chatter” and unable to think through the issue
In addition to the above, brainstorming sessions often turn into debates about what is right and wrong. As well as a need to find the solution on the spot. Sessions in return drag out, and hours can easily go by and no solution or incorrect solution can be the result.
Concept of brainstorming and collaboration is more popular than ever, and likely to stay in your organization. With a structured approach to brainstorming you can, however, keep it light, efficient and inclusive for all participants. And hereby create an excellent foundation for project leader / group to move forward with solutions based on ideas given.
