The probationary period is a practice where a new employee has the opportunity to adapt to a new position and prove their suitability to the employer.
The duration of this period may vary for various reasons, and its implementation has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
- Assessment of job fit: The probationary period allows both the company and the new employee to assess whether the position aligns with individual skills and expectations.
- Adaptation to the company: During the probationary period, a new employee can quickly familiarize themselves with the company's corporate culture and get to know future colleagues.
- Motivation: Working on a full-time basis towards the end of the probation period serves as a major incentive for interns to perform at their best. This allows the employer to assess their career ambitions and motivation.
Disadvantages:
- Instability: During the probation period, the company may change its hiring plans due to budget cuts, project closures, or loss of clients. However, any termination should be justified (e.g., the employee did not meet assigned tasks or made a significant mistake that caused substantial company losses). Employee termination decisions can be appealed, so the employer must have substantial evidence of non-compliance.
- Time-consuming: Implementing a probationary period requires expenditures, particularly in terms of time, both from the company and the candidates.
- Planning challenges: HR and other managers must monitor the performance of newcomers, evaluate their results, and ensure effective communication.
The probationary period can be a valuable tool for both the company and the employee. However, its implementation requires careful planning to ensure mutual benefit for both parties.
