Everyone likes to save money. From shopping to ordering food to even paying utility bills, in every big or small purchase we love to save some money, because we know the value of it and the hard work that went into earning it. But unfortunately, that savings doesn’t come easy. The stores don’t readily give away free money to the user, they make them work hard. Especially when it comes to shopping online, it becomes more complicated. There are just so many offers on credit / debit cards that run across the stores and they are not readily visible to the user, making it a daunting task to find the real price. Below are 2 card offers from a specific store;

  • Offer 1: 5% unlimited cashback on XYZ credit card. T&C apply
  • Offer 2: 10% off on ABC credit card. T&C apply

Any guesses, which is a better offer of the two? On the face of it, offer 2 seems to be a better offer. The catch is in the T&Cs. In the T&Cs, they have indicated that the maximum discount that can be availed on the card is Rs. 2000. Let’s now apply these offers in the 2 sample scenarios below;

  • Scenario 1: On a purchase of Rs. 80,000 worth of product, by logic while it may seem 10% off should get you Rs. 8000 as discount, you will only get Rs. 2000 as discount, as in the T&C they capped the max. discount to Rs. 2000. However the 5% unlimited cashback has no such cap, so it turns out to be a better offer which can get you Rs.?4000 as cashback. We just proved 5% is better than 10%.
  • Scenario 2: On a purchase of Rs. 20,000 worth of product, following the logic of scenario 1, 5% unlimited cashback might only get you Rs. 1000 as cashback, but the 10% off can get you Rs. 2000 discount. So, in this case, 10% off is a better offer.

In both the scenarios, one just can’t readily find the difference unless they looked deeper into the details, the T&Cs. Such cases exist across almost all online ecommerce players and the user is just oblivious to the real saving potential for the exact same product, just because this info is not readily available, and they don’t have the time to do the research. Many users are habituated to buying from their go-to store ignoring all saving possibilities. In the process, the person benefitting is the store and the person loosing out is the user.
