Let’s talk "PROFESSIONALISM,"?
It is is an opinion or perception?
One that can hold so many talented diverse women back from their ultimate goals due to fear of judgement or feelings of shame about difference.
In my career there has always been some degree of commentary which has resulted in lost opportunities or conforming to excel.
Trying to fit in or adopt 'Professionalism'
31% of women surveyed had hidden or delayed wearing an afro or dreadlocks at work.
I am still guilty on occasions of the “tuck and hide” myself.
The years of programming to believe that what I look like directly equates to what I can achieve (or my worth) is not easy to unlearn!
To be honest, it is quite painful to acknowledge otherness!
I have spent over 30 years trying to kill off parts of myself that actually make me unique ??
When we stop trying to be a cookie cutter versions of ourselves or what society deems appropriate, we stand out and become our highest selves.
I recently got to share this perspective with over 700 c-suite leaders, last week exploring creating a culture of belonging on the workplace wellbeing agenda
"Learning to say people's names correctly is just one of simplest ways to create a culture of belonging!"
Authentic, genuine and real is actually our true greatness!
Superficial judgement is toxic!?
I believe the current perception of 'Professionalism' perpetuates systems and cultures that are oppressive and destroy difference.
Aboud & Piaget explore the development stages of children to understand feelings of shame and how as early as 7 -8 years old we internalise difference.

Oppression and resistance show up in all shapes and sizes, not just connected to race or colour. Privilege is also being educated, middle class and speaking english.
