Private Leadership

Private leadership concerns a leader's one-to-one interactions with individuals, which is the fourth dimension of Leadership. While leadership involves creating a sense of group unity, it's important to recognize that groups are composed of individuals with diverse ambitions, confidence levels, experiences, and psychological make-ups. Therefore, treating each person as an individual is essential, underscoring the importance of private leadership.

14 private leadership behaviours, categorized into two main groups:

1. Individual Purpose and Task (5 behaviors):

- These include actions like appraising, selecting, and disciplining individuals.

2. Individual Building and Maintenance (9 behaviors):

- These involve recognizing and nurturing rising talent and other supportive actions.

Some leaders may find the powerful conversations required by private leadership, such as performance appraisals, uncomfortable. As a result, they might avoid these crucial behaviours, which can diminish their overall leadership effectiveness. The intimacy of private leadership can lead to avoidance behaviours, either due to a lack of skill or because of negative self-image beliefs that cause fears about these encounters. This is why personal leadership is vital, it helps improve a leader's one-to-one skills and reduce interpersonal fears.

- Encourage leaders to act as role models and mentors.

3. Feedback Mechanisms:

- Create opportunities for regular, constructive feedback.

- Encourage self-reflection and goal-setting based on feedback.

4. Culture of Continuous Improvement:

- Foster an organizational culture that values continuous learning and self-improvement.

- Recognize and reward personal growth and self-leadership achievements.
