HOW PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS ARE UTILISING AI: THE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES OF EMPLOYING DIGITAL

In the last few years, AI has been making huge strides in the world of technology. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, it has become an integral part of our everyday lives, and it is only going to become more prevalent as time goes on. The rise of AI has created many opportunities for Private Equity Firms and their portfolio companies, and its potential is only just beginning to be explored.

Private Equity firms are recognizing the power of tech to help their portfolio companies succeed. With technology, they can reduce expenses, gain a deep understanding of customers’ behavior and make more informed decisions. This way, they can keep up with their competitors in the market and stay ahead of the game. AI also has the ability to aid Private Equity firms in identifying new opportunities and making informed investments. By leveraging data analytics and machine learning, they can gain valuable insights into potential investments and develop strategies that will maximize returns on their investments.

According to a recent study performed by Intrust in 2019, ‘over 90% of private equity firms believe AI will disrupt their sector by 2024, 91% of respondents believe that AI will disrupt their sector within five years, over half (58%) think blockchain has the potential to disrupt their sector, and a third (33%) say that blockchain, AI, and robotics are already being adopted in the industry and will become more widespread in the near future.’

If we look at the reports of AI use in 2022 by the Private Funds CFO Insights Survey (2022) 50% of Private markets firms that were surveyed rated the effectiveness of advanced tech, such as AI, as medium or high for portfolio monitoring and 52% of Private markets firms rated the effectiveness of advanced tech, such as AI, as medium or high for deal due diligence. Evidently, the industry has now not only adopted AI to trial and assist but has employed it across many roles due to its performance levels and capabilities. However, there is still just less than half of those surveyed that have rated AI’s performance as satisfactory or less. The role and processes of Private Equity require human communication, and the ability to physically interact, build relationships, and connect and this is something that will never be replicated or conveyed through artificial intelligence.
