CPPA commences latest formal rulemaking initiative
The California Privacy Protection Agency announced the opening of a formal public comment period for proposed rulemaking for cybersecurity audits, risk assessments, automated decision-making technology and insurance companies obligations under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as well as updating existing regulations. The public comment period ends 14 Jan. 2025
Texas attorney general to investigate children's privacy practices at 15 tech companies?
The Texas attorney general's office announced investigations into 15 technology companies related to their children's safety and data privacy practices under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act and Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment Act. The office noted both statutes being applied "extend to how minors interact with AI products." The companies under investigation include Character.AI, Reddit, Instagram and Discord.?
Irish Data Protection Commission fines Meta €251 Million?
The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced final decisions following two inquiries into Meta Platforms Ireland Limited (MPIL) regarding a personal data breach reported in September 2018. The breach impacted approximately 29 million Facebook accounts globally, including 3 million in the EU/EEA. Compromised data included users' full names, email addresses, phone numbers, locations, workplaces, dates of birth, religions, genders, timeline posts, group memberships, and children’s personal data. Unauthorized third parties exploited user tokens on the Facebook platform to access this data. MPIL and its U.S. parent company resolved the breach shortly after discovering it
