PRIVACY

PRIVACY

Those who know me both personally and professionally understand that when I say privacy is not just my job but my passion, I mean it wholeheartedly.

Privacy is the right of individuals to control access to their personal information, communications, and activities. It involves the ability to decide what information is shared, with whom, and for what purpose. Privacy encompasses physical privacy (freedom from surveillance), informational privacy (control over personal data), and digital privacy (protection from unauthorized access to digital communications and activities).

?

Why Privacy is Important

Fundamental Human Right

Privacy is recognized as a basic human right by global organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union. It is essential for personal dignity, freedom of thought, and autonomy.

Protection from Surveillance and Control

Without privacy, individuals are vulnerable to constant monitoring by governments, corporations, or malicious actors. Mass surveillance can lead to a chilling effect on free speech, self-censorship, and restrictions on personal and political freedoms.

Security of Personal Information

Privacy safeguards sensitive data, including financial records, medical history, and communications, preventing identity theft, fraud, and unauthorized access.

Prevention of Manipulation and Exploitation

When personal data is collected without consent, it can be used for targeted manipulation, such as political influence (e.g., Cambridge Analytica scandal) or consumer exploitation (e.g., aggressive advertising based on private behaviors).

Essential for Democracy and Freedom

In democratic societies, privacy enables freedom of expression, association, and political participation. It protects whistleblowers, journalists, and activists who challenge power structures or expose corruption.

Trust in Digital and Physical Environments

Privacy fosters trust in businesses, governments, and social interactions. When people feel their information is secure, they are more likely to engage freely and honestly in both digital and offline spaces.

Defence Against Authoritarianism

History has shown that violations of privacy often lead to authoritarian control, where governments or organizations use data to suppress opposition, track dissidents, and erode civil liberties.

Balance Between Safety and Freedom

While security measures are necessary, they should not come at the expense of individual freedoms. Privacy ensures a fair balance between safety and personal rights, preventing overreach by authorities.

?

Privacy is not just about secrecy - it is about control, dignity, and freedom. Without it, society risks losing fundamental democratic values and individual autonomy. I strongly believe that privacy is under attack from multiple sources right now, and we must act immediately - both as a society and as individuals - to defend it. The time to stand up is now.

Do you think the EU is afraid of DeepSeek getting the data of its citizens because it then loses control, or is the EU acting as a benevolent dictator / holder of its citizens data? What would happen if citizens were in control of their own data, like a “bitcoin” filled with their information, free to share or trade as they liked? Together with some MBA alumni, this idea was floated in 2012, but the timing wasn’t right. Maybe it is better timing now.
