Prisoner of War 93,705
When visiting the Dossin barracks in Mechelen as a deportation point to Auschwitz-Birkennau and the Belgian Army Museum in Brussels, I realized that very little has been written about the deportation of soldiers during the Second World War to the labor camps in Germany. I therefore decided to write a book based on a family member, my grandfather, who experienced all this as a soldier. He stayed in Stalag IIB in Hammerstein, located in present-day Poland. The booklet was written as a testimony of him and the many who stayed there during the Second World War and contains photos and experiences based on his life story. What makes this work unique? The military prisoners of war have long since died and have taken their stories with them. The children from these war families have also largely died and this booklet contains the last testimonies of these generations.
