Prioritizing Self-Care in a Busy Season

Prioritizing Self-Care in a Busy Season

Can you believe we’re down to just over two months left in the year? While there is plenty to be excited for this time of year, there's also a ton of work still to be done.?

HR teams, in particular, are often swamped as the year draws to a close. Between open enrollments, updating company handbooks and policies, finalizing performance reviews and evaluations, figuring out 2025 budgets, planning holiday parties and events, etc., it’s a lot.?

With so much going on, taking care of yourself is super important! To help with that, here are some quick tips:

  • Use mindful breathing. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and slowly exhale for 8. This can quickly calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.
  • Do a digital detox. Take regular breaks from screens throughout the day to reduce information overload and promote relaxation.?
  • Take a short walk. Even just a 10-minute walk alleviates stress and releases endorphins to give you a natural boost.
  • Seek support. It can be easy to feel like you’ve got to do it all yourself or that you don’t want to be a burden to others. But humans are wired to help one another! Reaching out to others can give you valuable emotional relief.

Investing a little time for self-care can make a huge difference and help you get through this busy season!

What to expect in this month's newsletter:

In today’s highly competitive job market, HR managers want innovative ways to attract new talent. One underutilized resource in talent recruitment is the student demographic.?

Whether we’re talking about high school seniors weighing future options, college students seeking jobs that complement their academic schedules, or non-traditional students balancing various responsibilities, this is a valuable segment to reach. After all, these individuals bring enthusiasm and fresh perspectives to the workplace.

Creating a strategy to reach students can really move the needle when you’re looking to expand your workforce. Our recent blog post is loaded with insights on building an effective plan to connect with them.

NSC Safety Congress & Expo 2024

Between September 13-19, the National Safety Council (NSC) held its 2024 Safety Congress & Expo in Orlando, FL. The main event took place from 9/16-18, with additional professional development seminars – including opportunities to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and update certifications – a couple of days before and after it.

The expo kicked off with a keynote address from world-renowned blind adventurer Erik Weihenmayer. NSC president and CEO, Lorraine Martin, also gave remarks to help connect Weihenmayer’s message to the NSC’s mission of “eliminating the leading causes of preventable death.”

Beyond the keynote, the world’s largest annual safety event had over 100 technical and educational sessions. They covered a wide range of important, timely topics for EHS and HR professionals. Along with the sessions, an expo floor featured the latest in safety technologies and solutions.

The 2025 event is taking place September 15-17 in Denver, CO. Additionally, professional development seminars will be held in the days leading up to and immediately following the main event. If you’re interested in attending, sign up here to receive information and updates.

HR Trends to Watch

Staying on top of industry trends can positively impact your career. When it comes to HR trends, here are some worth keeping an eye on:

  • The fastest-growing segment of the workforce between now and 2030? Nope, it’s not Gen Z. According to Mercer, it’s workers aged 75 and up. This highlights the importance of avoiding ageism (which is really just a good practice regardless).
  • Blue-collar and “new collar” jobs are seeing increased demand and interest, especially in manufacturing and technical trades. Knowing that, how will this impact your recruitment efforts? Can you use this to position your company as an employer of choice for workers interested in those kinds of positions?
  • Recession fears are real, whether or not a recession is going to happen. This leads to organizational anxiety. In turn, that can affect employee performance. Top HR professionals are finding ways to alleviate the anxiety so team members can do their best work.
  • Employee engagement 2.0 is a hot topic in HR. While Kevin Kruse’s book is over twelve years old, Gallup reports that engagement is finally becoming a focal point for business leaders. An increasing amount of evidence points to engagement as being correlated with company performance, so that’s simply smart business.
