Prioritizing Relational Excellence and Leading High Performing Teams - YES IT'S POSSIBLE

What happened to us? Now more than ever, the limiting factor in the growth of any business isn't capital, it isn't ideas, it isn't high performance technology, it isn't taxes, it is PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS. Depending upon the experiences of the leaders we all had before becoming a leader, we made a serious assumption.

What is the equation we inherited from those who taught us leadership between "relating to people" and "getting stuff done".

For me it was - ALL OF LIFE IS PERSONAL and SOMETIMES WE GET TO DO BUSINESS.

I love the way Peter Drucker puts it, “Your first role… is the personal one. It is the relationship with people, the development of mutual confidence, the identification of people, the creation of a community. This is something only you can do.”

I have a relative who is a pastor. He relates well, but doesn't get a lot of things done. I saw some of my Microsoft colleagues who never tried to know their teams and peers, be very productive, but mostly create friction. They were surprised when i might ask - "hey could we get coffee." They were just "too busy" to relate.

For me, I was fortunate when i moved to Atlanta to have a few highly influential mentors including Rusty Gordon , Frank Bishop , Jerry Thames take the time and try to get to know me. They wanted to help me in my career and were 20 years ahead of me (about the age I am now). They treated me like a brother when they didn't have to and didn't have the time to do so. It had a profound effect on showing me it was possible to care when i went through my own intensely busy periods.

The hard part of their path was I had to face myself. I had to deal with uncaring attitudes in me as I met many people different from me in high stress situations which pushed all of my buttons. But the results, I now receive are that I want to improve in BOTH my way of relating and my efficiency which has meant a lot in this CEO role which has plenty of stress and challenging obstacles and opportunities.

I love the way one of Rali's partner's Sicora Consulting puts it in their effective journey on using personality assessments to help teams "see" each other. I hope its helpful to you on your journey.
