Prioritizing Integrity, Mental Health, and Wellbeing

Prioritizing Integrity, Mental Health, and Wellbeing

My Personal Journey

The decision to step away from a lucrative position without another opportunity lined up isn’t one made lightly. It’s an act of prioritizing personal integrity, mental health, and overall wellbeing—not just for myself, but for my two children. One is navigating the complexities of applying to colleges, while the other is starting the high school experience. At such pivotal moments in their lives, they need a parent who is present and engaged. I realized that maintaining a healthy work-life balance was crucial to be the person they need.

Why I Chose to Leave

For a long time, I found myself working around the clock, often on weekends, with little reward for the effort I poured in. The work environment did not honor my time, talent, or contributions, which had an impact not just on me but on my team as well. It wasn’t about a single issue but a broader cultural challenge that, as in most organizations, starts at the top and affects team synergy, productivity, and morale.

I want to be clear that this is not about placing blame. I have deep respect for the colleagues I worked alongside and still maintain valuable connections from my time there. However, bad culture can diminish employee wellbeing, push good people out, and harm a company’s potential for success. When a positive work culture isn't prioritized, the consequences are clear.

Building My Own Path

My departure wasn’t just about leaving a job; it was about building a better path for myself and my family. I’m not looking for an easy ride—quite the opposite. I’ve channeled my work ethic, passion, and experience into starting my own consulting business. It’s a new challenge, but one that allows me to uphold my values while helping others develop strategies and solutions that work.

Entrepreneurship isn’t an easy journey, but for now, I'm embracing it with enthusiasm and commitment. I’m driven not only by the desire to succeed but by a mission to create value in a way that aligns with my principles. It’s proof that leaving a toxic environment doesn’t mean stepping back; it’s about stepping forward with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.

The Takeaway: Prioritize People and Culture

My experience reinforces a simple truth: when companies fail to take care of their people, they lose out. Employee wellbeing is critical not just for retention but for fostering innovation, loyalty, and sustained success. And for those facing similar crossroads, know that choosing integrity and mental health over comfort isn’t weakness—it’s strength.

I hope this message serves as a reminder that you don’t have to compromise your values to maintain your career. Sometimes, the bravest move is to create your own path, where hard work, integrity, and wellbeing aren’t just valued—they’re essential to success.

Prioritizing integrity, mental health, and wellbeing is essential for fostering a healthy and productive environment. When we uphold integrity in our actions and decisions, we build trust and create a culture of respect. This, in turn, supports mental health and wellbeing, as individuals feel valued and safe. It’s important to encourage open conversations about mental health and to support one another in our journeys. By making integrity a cornerstone of our approach, we can promote a workplace and community where everyone thrives, both personally and professionally.

Well said - a real life Jerry McGuire mission statement. One that will sadly, like Jerry’s, fall on deaf ears of those that should listen!
