As we observe Mental Health Day, I feel compelled to share some thoughts that have been on my mind. Mental health struggles are often misunderstood, and people suffering from them often face a lack of empathy.
?
When someone has a physical illness like a fever or cold, it's common to receive numerous calls and messages checking in on them. But when it comes to mental health, the response is often vastly different. People may dismiss it with comments like, "You're overthinking" or "Just chill, it's normal." But is that really the right approach?
?
Why is it so difficult for us to acknowledge that someone may be struggling with mental health issues? Instead of offering generic solutions, why can’t we take a moment to truly empathize and try to understand their experience?
?
Mental health is serious. The struggle is real, and it’s not always visible. People suffering often feel isolated, even in environments like their workplace or home. At work, you might see someone staring blankly at an Excel sheet, unable to focus, not because they don’t want to perform but because their mind is overwhelmed.
?
We need to start acknowledging this reality. It is not nonsense. It's not something we should ignore or dismiss. If you're going through it, please accept that it's okay to seek help. Surround yourself with people who genuinely listen and support you.

If you're supporting someone going through mental health struggles, truly listen to them. The simple act of being there for someone can make all the difference. People need empathy, not pity. It's not enough to say, "I'm empathetic." Being empathetic means actively supporting and listening without judgment or offering overly simplistic solutions.
?
For those experiencing mental health challenges, remember that you are not alone. Look around you—your family, your friends, even your kids—sometimes the simplest things, like being present with loved ones, can help lift your spirits.
?
In the hustle of life, mental health challenges are inevitable. Instead of avoiding, ignoring, or judging, let’s focus on truly hearing and understanding one another. This can make a world of difference for someone who’s struggling.
?
Remember: you’re not in this alone. It's okay to ask for help. Take a deep breath, acknowledge what you're feeling, and take small steps toward healing. The journey might be tough, but with empathy, support, and time, you will get through it.

Let’s keep the conversation going, and let’s prioritize empathy over judgment. ?? #MentalHealthMatters #Empathy #Support

2 周"This is such an important perspective and excellent article, Poonam Ji. Mental health struggles are often invisible, yet they impact productivity, relationships, and overall well-being just as much—if not more—than physical ailments. The workplace, in particular, needs to evolve beyond just acknowledging mental health to actively supporting employees through meaningful conversations and resources. Empathy is not just about saying the right words; it’s about truly listening, understanding, and standing by those who need support. Let’s normalize talking about mental health with the same care and urgency as we do physical health."
