Prioritising our People for a Premium Product

Tasman’s story is one of a premium product, but also of the passion and people behind it. We are acutely aware that the energy, enthusiasm and dedication that our people bring to their work reflects back in the high quality of our finished leather. With this in mind, Tasman Leathers of New Zealand has steadfastly prioritised the wellbeing of our team.

What does this look like?

As a truly end-to-end leather processor, the breadth of opportunities within the tannery are completely comprehensive of the leather manufacturing process. Our tannery embraces a wide range of articles, innovative technology and rigorous quality control, resulting in diverse and exciting project work.

Due to the unique environment of the tannery, all our staff go through a specialised training process, whether employed to perform light work or heavy work, including all operator positions. This ensures staff feel totally comfortable and confident within their roles. All training is carried out by the highest calibre of mentors, who are well-qualified to deliver. Opportunities for continued learning are available; Tasman staff remain up-to-date with industry best practices and are encouraged to work towards their goals. For some, this may look like obtaining a NZQA Level 4 qualification in Fundamentals of Leather Manufacturing, which Tasman sponsors.

Our high performing team is made up of people from many different backgrounds, skills, experience and aspirations. On the job training, high performance, and an appetite to progress creates opportunities for progression from tannery workers to senior operator roles.

From the very beginning, Tasman Leathers of New Zealand has been based in beautiful Whanganui. Tasman’s location on the banks of our mighty river continues to delight and inspire staff. Being in close proximity to the water is a highlight for many, who enjoy exploring all the Whanganui region has to offer; such as the nearby beaches, hiking trails and hills. Wherever you are in Whanganui, nature is always close by! Whanganui also has a well established arts scene, with thriving creative societies such as theatre and music, and is home to dozens of established sports clubs and facilities.

A day at Tasman is hands-on, involved and engaging. Across the board, our staff can be sure the work they are collaborating on results in a premium product they can be proud of. Tasman strive towards ensuring staff feel valued and we show our appreciation through competitive pay rates, a paid day off to celebrate their birthdays and various social events throughout the year. We recognise this is the least we can do - after all, the team at Tasman are truly the backbone of the company.
