Prioritising Indoor Air Quality: A Vital Concern Comparable to Climate Change

The issue of climate change has occupied a central position in global discussions recently. However, there is another crucial aspect that demands our immediate attention: indoor air quality. As scientific research continues to uncover the profound implications of indoor air pollution on human health, it is becoming clearer that this is an issue of significance that warrants greater action. While our focus on outdoor pollution and climate change has been commendable, the significance of indoor air quality cannot be overlooked, particularly given its direct impact on human well-being and productivity.

It is crucial to recognise that the air we breathe within our homes and workplaces can be equally harmful, if not more so, than the outdoor air we commonly associate with pollution. According to the World Health Organisation, household air pollution was responsible for an estimated 3.2 million deaths per year in 2020, including over 237 000 deaths of children under the age of 5.

Another recent study shows that poor indoor air quality can lead to a range of health issues, including respiratory diseases, allergies, and even long-term chronic conditions. Moreover, it has been linked to a decrease in cognitive abilities and overall productivity, highlighting the broader impact it has on societal well-being and economic performance.

While global awareness of the importance of air quality has grown, it is essential not to underestimate the urgency of addressing indoor air quality issues. It is imperative that we do not repeat the mistakes made in underestimating the significance of climate change, and instead, take proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with indoor air pollution.

Fortunately, governmental bodies and policymakers have begun acknowledging the significance of this issue. Countries like the UK, the EU, and the UAE have taken proactive steps in addressing indoor air quality concerns. In the UAE, notable efforts have been made towards implementing a comprehensive clean air agenda, aiming to improve air quality both indoors and outdoors. This forward-looking approach aligns with international initiatives such as the Conference of the Parties (COP), where global leaders convene to discuss climate change and related issues. As the UAE continues to actively participate in such global forums, its commitment to addressing the broader aspects of air quality, including indoor pollution, is becoming increasingly evident.

A comprehensive approach to tackle indoor air pollution involves a combination of regulatory measures, public awareness campaigns, and the promotion of sustainable practices in construction and architecture. Emphasising the importance of well-ventilated spaces, the use of sustainable materials, and the implementation of effective air filtration systems can significantly contribute to ensuring healthier indoor environments.

The critical interplay between indoor air quality and the broader climate change discussion underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability. Recognising the immediate health implications of indoor air pollution and its long-term societal and economic impact is vital in shaping effective policies and initiatives. By prioritising the improvement of indoor air quality, we not only ensure a healthier and more productive society but also reinforce our commitment to a sustainable and resilient future.

There will be raised awareness when people realizes the impact of indoor air pollution on their health, like asthma , heart diseases and so on . Providing measuring devices to assess the level of indoor air Pollution will be a starting point to raise this awareness. For sure having regulatory measures at a national level will be a great starting point in imposing the right criteria’s in using sustainable building materials and proper air filtration .
