To get the balance right, Simon mentions that it’s dependent on your seniority as a manager. For instance:

1) Junior/Front-line Managers?

Junior managers should focus on people over processes. You should build rapport and nurture your relationships with them. Essentially, you must embody a leadership style that supports your employees and on the process side of things remove barriers and roadblocks to enable your employees to execute effectively.

2) Senior Managers

On the other hand, senior managers should have a balance even more heavily towards people. You have fewer direct reports which rely on you to give them day to day direction; therefore, your primary role is to focus on the people side of things, support your managers and make changes to processes that are a necessity based on the relationships you have built.

Specifically, be a servant leader who coaches/mentors them and helps them troubleshoot their problems as a sounding board.

It's important to note that your role evolves, and you need to make sure you have the right people underneath you to carry on the people management and the nurturing of the teams at all levels.
