Priorities to guide credit union advocacy

Priorities to guide credit union advocacy

It was great welcoming the 119th Congress last week, kicking off a critical year in advocacy with vital introductions and re-introductions to policymakers and staff. Seventeen leagues representing 32 states and dozens of credit unions joined America’s Credit Unions in the nation’s capital for swearing-in day activities.

These efforts ensure credit unions are part of creating policy from the first day of the new Congress, laying a foundation for solid engagement that will benefit credit unions and elected officials during their time in office.

Check out our video highlighting the whirlwind of activity—from Capitol Hill events and open houses with members of Congress and staff, to our welcome reception for new members of Congress, and hear directly from advocates why engaging with the new congress is essential to achieving our goals.

And now it’s time to get to business. This week we released our 2025 advocacy priorities and shared them with House and Senate leaders, detailing how these policies will uplift people and communities:

  • Protect credit unions, including the credit union tax status, fighting overregulation, and preserving the current interchange system.
  • Empower the credit union difference through a fair regulatory environment, greater fraud prevention, and strong federal data protection standards.
  • Advance credit union opportunities, access to credit unions, greater flexibility, and more innovation.

Our priorities—developed with our board, leagues, and credit unions to protect, empower, and advance the movement—are focused on developing a regulatory and legislative environment that enables credit unions to thrive. The success of our unified efforts will strengthen our entire nation.

Thank you to all who engaged with us in building these priorities, I’m excited to work with Congress and the incoming administration to move them forward.
