This impression is pencil signed, dated, and annotated "Eget Tryk" (My Impression) by the artist in the lower margin. The image measures 6-1/2 x 5-1/8 inches. This scarce color blockprint by Scandinavian printmaker Albert Julius Larsen (1885-1957) is available from the gallery for $400.00.

Danish-born Swedish artist Albert Larsen did this woodcut in 1923. He used a black, linear block to carry the composition, a gray tint block and allowed the paper to show through in the clouds.

Larsen depicts a Scandinavian road, running between plowed fields and bordered by large, art deco trees. In the background large white storm clouds form over dark rain clouds. In the margin he wrote "Eget Tryk", Danish for "My impression" (Artist's Proof).

Danish-born Swedish artist?Albert Julius Martin Larsen?was born on September 5, 1885, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Larsen studied art with Viggo Johansen at the Danish Konstakademien in Copenhagen and took numerous study trips to Germany, Austria, and Italy. He settled first in Norway where he painted for four years.?In the 1920s he moved to Ystad, in Sweden, where he remained the rest of his life.?

Larsen had solo exhibitions in Ystad and took part in the Swedish / Danish exhibition in Copenhagen in 1942.?His works include portraits, florals, and landscapes.?Albert J. M. Larsen died in Ystad, Sweden in 1957.

This simple but dramatic two color woodcut is from the collection of Danish art critic and author Georg Br?chner, who wrote about Scandinavian art for the British art magazine "The Studio" in the early 20th century. He assembled a "Golden Book" of prints and drawings that were given to him by his artist friends, many of whom were Scandinavian.
