For decades, the health and fitness club industry has operated as a dual-functioning business: one side focuses on selling memberships to prospects, while the other emphasizes selling training services to members. While securing memberships keeps the doors open, it’s the training and results-driven engagement that truly drive member retention and business longevity.
If you’re a club owner with little to no training expertise, know that you’re not alone. Most fitness centers around the world are owned by individuals who may excel in business operations but lack the technical knowledge of exercise science. This situation is similar to a restaurant owner who depends on a chef to deliver quality meals. But here’s the critical question: how does a club owner know if their trainers are effectively delivering results to members?
As both a club owner and exercise physiologist, I’ve seen both sides of this equation. I understand the operational costs that come with running a successful fitness business, as well as the science behind engaging members and delivering measurable results. And here’s the bottom line: no results equal poor retention.
The Challenge: Delivering Consistent, Proven Results
One of the biggest hurdles I faced when creating the “RAMP (Resistance Applied Metabolic Prescription)” model was ensuring consistent results for members. Across the industry, many trainers still lack the scientific foundation needed to create evidence-based fitness programs. Some trainers “do their own thing,” which might yield decent outcomes, but how can a club owner measure their effectiveness or ensure consistency across their team?
Exercise science offers proven principles that must be embedded into every fitness program to guarantee results. These aren’t just theories—they’re universal truths. Without them, members won’t achieve their goals, and retention will suffer.
Why These Principles Matter
As a club owner, your best investment is ensuring your trainers fully understand and apply these principles. Unfortunately, not all certified trainers or college graduates can confidently explain or implement them. Conversely, some of the most effective coaches I’ve seen had minimal formal education but excelled because they followed these principles and paired them with strong coaching skills.
For example, we’ve had some exceptional coaches come from non-traditional backgrounds—like former hairdressers or bartenders —who learned and applied these principles with outstanding success. The key takeaway: it’s not just about credentials; it’s about understanding and execution.

A fitness prescription is a structured plan designed by a trainer or coach to guide a client toward improved fitness. For this plan to be effective, trainers must have a thorough understanding of core exercise science principles. These principles are essential for crafting personalized programs that deliver real results.

Factors like age, current fitness level, abilities, and objectives must be considered before creating a plan. In short, one size fits one! Copy-pasting workout programs from champions or celebrities is ineffective and often leads to poor outcomes for most clients.
Simply asking, “How does that feel?” isn’t an adequate assessment. Trainers must collect measurable data through standardized assessments to build programs that truly work. For example:

But one thing I know. Rocco has forgotten more about exercise science than most people know. But what makes Rocco great is he sees both sides of the industry. The commercial and the science side. His science commentary here is dead on (I say that not because I know much but because he said it). But what I can comment on with confidence is he’s right on about us operators. The time has come that we lead the charge of moving the industry from just backfilling our terms every month, and trust me when I say I was the Chairman of the Board for that committee, to taking accountability for providing a product that is driven by getting results for our customers.
