Principles for Digital Workplace / Enterprise End User Computing 2.0
Most of us today has multiple devices from which we access and create content, collaborate with our teams, that we call as end user computing devices. There is a sprawl of such devices in the recent years mostly the ones which are very close to us individually. In today’s world where every industry is leveraging technology to re imagine their businesses, the transactions and interactions are purely turning digital and the dependency on such devices is compulsory for every business to exist. Some of us got to use / access these devices from our work or academia to begin with before they became an integral part our day to day life.
In the modern world the end user computing devices that we are more comfortable and familiar are the personal ones than the ones which we use at work. Its a truth that we prefer the experience of working from a personal Ipad than a company provided Surface or Laptop. What makes us closer to the personal devices is the experience and freedom.
That definitely brings in the question on why can’t we re-imagine the EUC space within Enterprises for each of us to have the same experience. We also need to realize the fact that the current solutions adopted by majority of enterprises in the EUC 1.0 space draws a higher cost per user both in terms of Capex and Opex. For all of this we need a new narrative for EUC for Enterprises that can be compelling on the User Experience, Cost, Agility and Security. We find these more relevant in the current context of extending workplaces to our home.
My thoughts on the Principles of Digital Workplace or the End User Computing 2.0
Devices - Software - All devices that are being considered in this space of EUC (Workstations, Laptops, Tabs, Phones, POS and other HH) is in the form of a software.
People – Experiences / Personas – It should be all about experiences for each of the personas that are consuming these services.
Session - Is an App ! – Every session needs to be viewed as an application.
OS – Superfluous - There is no relevance of the OS from an enterprise context on any of the devices as the OS is locked in all of the scenarios. No more golden images as the device is a software going forward.
Operations – BOTS – Zero hands and feet support. Bring in the concept of Observability into the space of EUC and drive the operations through BOTS.
Compute – Hybrid - Take advantage of the computing power at the edges and Cloud
Access – Ubiquitous
Network – Internet
Data – Centralized
Security – By design, Fail Safe, Separation Privilege, Least Privilege
Collaboration - Cloud based
Hands and Feet Support - Nil
