Principle and Composition of Automobile Air Conditioning System

The car's air conditioning system is the biggest respite for every car owner who drives in the heat.

When the blazing sun is beating down on your head and you're escaping a sweaty day, there's nothing sweeter than a cold blast from an air conditioner.

There certainly won't be an ice machine or a grumpy leprechaun fanning you inside your car on a summer's day, but rather a very complex and carefully planned air conditioning system that uses compressors, condensers, evaporators, and many other components work together.

How does car air conditioning work?

As mentioned earlier, working on an air conditioner is a complicated job, but nothing so difficult that you can't understand it.

An air conditioning system has five main components:

? Compressor

? Condenser

? Receiver dryer or accumulator

? Expansion valve/orifice

? Evaporator

Cooling principle of automobile air conditioning system:

The whole process starts with a refrigerant -- a chemical compound that exists in the liquid or gaseous state and absorbs heat from its environment.

This compound is found in the air conditioner inside the copper coils, and when it encounters heat, it converts from a low-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid.

Once the air conditioning system is started, the refrigerant flows to the condenser.

Here, fresh air from the atmosphere also passes through the car air conditioner condenser, causing the gas to cool down and turn into a liquid.

This process acts on a change in pressure, which causes a change in temperature.

The resulting liquid then passes through a receiver dryer, which removes contaminants, impurities, and any moisture.

From there, the liquid goes to the thermal expansion valve, where the flow changes according to the temperature control you adjust, causing it to lose pressure and temperature.

At this point, the refrigerant turns into gas again and passes through the evaporator coil.

The liquid then turns to vapor as it passes through the evaporator coil and is blown into the cabin of the car as cool air.

Now that you have a brief understanding of how car air conditioning works, it's time to learn about the various components of the air cooling system in your engine.

? What is a compressor?

The compressor is known as one of the most important components in a car air conditioner. The main purpose of this particular component is to pressurize the refrigerant that cools the air.

? What is a condenser?

A condenser is a series of tubes or fins that allow heat to dissipate quickly, quickly cooling the chemical and starting the process of turning it into a gas again. It sits in front of the radiator, reducing temperature and pressure as you move to the next step.

? What is a receiver/dryer or accumulator?

The receiver/dryer is part of the car air conditioning system and is found on vehicles with a thermal expansion valve. The job of specific components is to hold liquids and separate them from gases, remove moisture, and filter contaminants.

If your car air conditioner contains a throttle tube instead of a thermal expansion valve, the car air conditioner system will use an accumulator instead of a receiver/dryer. The working of an accumulator is similar to that of a receiver/dryer.

? What is a thermal expansion valve/orifice tube?

Automotive air conditioning components also include thermal expansion valves or orifice tubes located between the condenser and evaporator. It monitors the pressure and temperature of the car's air conditioning system, then determines how much refrigerant can go to the evaporator.

? What is an evaporator?

The evaporator is the part that cools the cabin, the cooled liquid enters the evaporator through a small opening and as it passes through the hole it causes a drop in temperature which turns into a gas. This process cools the cabin by allowing the gas to absorb heat from the cabin.

The hot gas then returns from the evaporator to the compressor, repeating its journey.
