Primary School Made of Straw
Two days! That’s how long it took to build this little hut made out of dried straw. Its purpose? A primary school for children ages 6 to 12.
Over 20 years ago, this primary school was built by the village community in Bitkine, Guera; a region located within the northern area of Chad. It was the first primary school the village members invested in by collecting donations for those who wished their young children to attend. Some members of the community donated certain pieces of weaved blankets of dry straw in order to construct the walls and ceiling of the hut.?
This little hut provided shelter for the young students whenever it rained and whenever the heat was overbearing. It allowed for 50 students of different ages to sit on the ground floor crowded together while their teachers taught them with no resources or materials present. These students were taught by teachers who volunteered their time; to say that they were being paid or given the necessary resources to successfully teach their students is truly a blatant lie.
In this primary school made of dried straw, one would NEVER find a single textbook, a piece of paper, a sharpened wooden pencil, a chalkboard standing upright, a sturdy desk, an eraser, and not even a piece of chalk.

What would you find inside this tiny hut? Beautiful children learning through song, chants, and dance. You would find motivated children, who would walk for at least a mile every early morning to reach this little hut made of dried straw, just so they could have the opportunity to learn the alphabet and numbers in French.?
