Primark, a popular clothing retailer known for its affordable fast fashion, has a rich history dating back to 1969 when the first store under the name Penney's was opened in Dublin, Ireland. The brand quickly gained popularity for its low-cost, on-trend clothing and expanded across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Primark's business model focuses on offering a wide range of fashionable clothing, accessories, and homeware at affordable prices. As of 2022, Primark operates over 390 stores in 14 countries, with plans for further expansion into new markets.
The lates news is, Primark is assessing the Indian market from sometime & in talks with one of the Indian conglomerates to collaborate with them. Discussions among the market analysts is, "Will this entry impact on the existing retails brands in India like Zudio, H&M etc..."? as the operating model followed by all these brands are same.
Reasons why this question raised:
1. Sourcing and Supply Chain: The company is known for its commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainability, with initiatives in place to improve working conditions in its supply chain and reduce its environmental impact.
2. Low-Cost Strategy: China & Bangladesh are Primark's major sourcing countries where the labour cost is less & now is said to have integrated nearshoring into its supply chain strategy, enabling direct delivery of goods from Indian suppliers to local retail outlets. This could enhance their cost management. (This would give a tight competition to Zudio, which also has their own in-house design team and that's how it has full control on cost & quality)
3. Product Range: With its reputation for offering trendy clothing at affordable prices, Primark could challenge existing players by providing stiff competition in the value segment. Other brands may need to reassess their pricing strategies and product offerings to remain competitive in the face of Primark's entry.

4. Large Store Format: Primark operates large-format stores, often spanning several floors and offering a wide selection of products. (This might be another competitive advantage when compared to Zudio. Zudio believes in minimalistic approach ) The stores are designed to provide a convenient and enjoyable shopping experience for customers.
5. Minimal Advertising: Primark relies mainly on word-of-mouth and its strong reputation for value to attract customers. The company does not invest heavily in traditional advertising campaigns. (Again the similar strategy followed by Zudio too, TATA name was the biggest value to Zudio. The trust consumer has on Tata products made them to buy from here without a second thought)
6. Limited Online Presence: 80% of Primark's sales happens through the physical outlets. While Primark has an online presence in some markets, its focus remains primarily on brick-and-mortar stores. The company believes that the in-store experience is key to its success. (Some of Zudio collections are available on TATA's CLIQ app. Otherwise, Zudio also believes in in-store selling with very little online presence )
Overall, Primark's operating model revolves around offering fashionable products at affordable prices, with a focus on value, quality, and ethical practices.
Primark's entry could also lead to a shift in consumer preferences and shopping behaviors, influencing how other brands approach their marketing and expansion plans in the country.
