Just a weird sense that the digital thing doesn’t belong. This isn’t just bad design—it’s biological. Your brain is built to process space in a way most AR experiences simply ignore.

The Physical World Is More Than a Backdrop

Most AR today treats the real world like a passive stage, a canvas where digital content gets stamped on top. But the human brain doesn’t work that way. We don’t just see space—we feel it. We map it with our movements, our expectations, and an entire neural engine honed over millions of years to detect what belongs and what doesn’t.

Drop a floating UI panel in front of someone? It’s tolerated, but never believed. Place a virtual object in a room that doesn’t react to walls, lighting, or even the floor? It’s an alien intruder. When AR doesn’t acknowledge real-world physics, it breaks the immersive spell before it even begins.

  • Spatial persistence that matters: It’s not enough for AR objects to “stay” in place. They need to recognize that different surfaces have different affordances. A ball should bounce on a table differently than on carpet. A virtual lamp should dim when it’s shoved into a corner.
  • Interactions that leverage real-world context: Instead of arbitrary UI panels floating in space, interactions should be anchored to real surfaces, using the affordances of the world around the user. If a user moves to pick up a virtual object, it should resist like a real object would, not just teleport to their hand.

The best AR isn’t about adding more digital layers—it’s about making those layers disappear into the natural flow of human experience. When AR stops fighting the way our brains expect space to behave and starts working with it, that’s when immersion becomes real.
