The term "resonant leadership" was first coined by Richard Boyatzis , Annie McKee , and Daniel Goleman in their book titled "Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence." Published in 2002, the book explores the role of emotional intelligence in effective leadership and introduces the concept of resonant leadership as a key component of inspiring and motivating others. In my opinion it's the single most powerful leadership model I've come across in the past 20 years.

Resonant leadership refers to a leadership style that emphasizes emotional intelligence, authenticity, empathy, and a genuine connection with others. It is based on the ability to create a positive and supportive work environment where individuals feel valued, understood, and motivated to contribute their best efforts.

Resonant leaders possess a deep understanding of their own emotions and can effectively manage and regulate them. They are also attuned to the emotions of others, actively listening, and demonstrating empathy. By building strong relationships, resonant leaders inspire trust, promote collaboration, and empower their teams to achieve exceptional results.

This leadership approach draws on the principles of emotional intelligence, recognizing that emotions play a significant role in individual and collective performance. Resonant leaders create resonance, a state where positive emotions, such as enthusiasm, inspiration, and optimism, are shared and amplified throughout the organization. However, to foster a positive and engaging work environment, it is recommended for leaders to primarily focus on utilizing the Visionary, Democratic, Empathetic, and Coaching styles, aiming for these styles to constitute 90% of their leadership approach. Here are some tips for leaders to effectively employ these styles and create a resonant leadership culture:

1. Visionary Leadership: As a starting point, leaders can use the Visionary style to provide a clear and inspiring direction for their team or organization. They should articulate a compelling vision, share it with their team, and encourage others to contribute their ideas and perspectives. Leaders can communicate their vision through storytelling, visuals, and meaningful symbols, fostering a sense of purpose and aspiration.

2. Democratic Leadership: Embracing the Democratic style, leaders should involve their team members in decision-making processes. They can promote collaboration, actively listen to diverse viewpoints, and encourage open dialogue. Creating an inclusive and participatory environment empowers team members, strengthens their commitment, and promotes a sense of ownership and shared responsibility.

3. Empathetic Leadership: In individual or one-to-one scenarios, leaders can adopt the Empathetic style. Understanding their individual needs, concerns, and aspirations enables leaders to provide meaningful support, guidance, and recognition.

4. Coaching Leadership: Leaders can utilize the Coaching style to facilitate the growth and development of their team members. It is important to note that the Visionary and Democratic styles serve as strong starting points in any group or team scenario. These styles foster engagement, collaboration, and a sense of collective purpose. However, depending on specific circumstances, leaders may need to adapt their leadership styles and incorporate elements of Commanding or Pacesetting when urgency, crisis, or performance improvement is required. Similarly, in individual scenarios, leaders can initiate with the Empathetic style and then transition into the Coaching style to provide personalized support and enable individual growth.
