Pride and Prejudice: Information Gap
Information Gap is used in different meanings in sociology and literature.
In literature, the Information Gap refers to the difference in the amount of information between the characters and the readers in the work. And this plays a key role in creating fun in literary works. Usually in literature, readers are peeking into the lives of the characters in the work. And they has a lot more information. And this difference in information makes it interesting. Jane Austen is the author who makes the best use of it.
Readers are aware that Elizabeth and Darcy will fall in love as a result. However, the author repeatedly shows Elizabeth dissatisfied with Darcy. The scene where Darcy proposes to Elizabeth immediately after she hearing that Jane and Bingley have parted ways due to Darcy. Readers are amused by imagining Elizabeth's revenge on Darcy.
In the second half of the work, the author uses the Information Gap in the opposite way. In the second half, Elizabeth and Darcy feel strong love for the other. However, her family, who still think that Elizabeth hates Darcy, speak ill of Darcy in front of her. Readers who know their relationship are amused by imagining Elizabeth's embarrassment.
