From Our Circle

Take a look at Origin Energy and its LGBTQIA+ allyship in action. Last year they were awarded ‘Gold Employer status’ at the Australian LGBTQ Inclusion Awards in recognition of their commitment and achievements in this space.

Origin Energy’s active Pride@Origin Network is just one way they utilise their internal infrastructure to promote and drive LGBTQIA+ inclusion. They also:

  • Have signed the Darlington Statement, which calls out the human rights demands of intersex people in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Offer Gender Affirmation Leave of 6 weeks with 12 weeks at half pay to allow for flexibility because they recognise that everyone’s experience is going to be different.
  • Installed gender-neutral bathrooms in their Melbourne head office refurbishment.
  • Host events outside the key days of significance to keep the conversations alive year-round.
  • Ensure inclusion and awareness extend to their regional employees. For example, by hosting virtual events and supporting and donating to regional communities and events.
  • Provide training to employees to enhance their understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues and inclusion.

“It’s important for people to feel included, respected, and understood. That’s why over the last few years we have made a considerable and conscious effort to create or update Origin policies, procedures, and support mechanisms to be inclusive of LGBTQIA+ experiences.” - Dyllyn Tierney, Origin Diversity and Inclusion team.
