In the several companies I've been running, we did experiments with pricing. Some worked spectacularly, some completely blew up. We could not correlate what generated success, or not, in those experiments. And what I had learned about pricing in business school and what I could read about pricing in books, including books from many of the so-called pricing thought leaders, was rather useless information. It was way too academic and theoretical. Not something I, as a business leader, could use.
So some 11 years ago I quit my job with a quest to figure out a process that makes pricing practical. A process that would have given me the information I needed when running these companies. A process that would enable me to understand the correlation between successful and not successful pricing experiments - so I could focus only on what is successful. I called the process "The Six Steps Process To Better Pricing" and I built my company Atenga around that process.
A friend of mine ran a business in the home theater space, and he agreed to be the guinea pig for the Six Step Process for our very first project. It worked spectacularly.
Since then we completed about 500 of these projects, and from that can enjoy 499 references. The process works.
Just yesterday I spoke to a CEO of a former client. Using the Six Step Process, we could advise on the marketing strategy, price structure, and bundling strategy that justified price increases with about 20- 25%. She said; "Sales volume have never been higher." We added some $11m in pure profit to the company.
But not all firms need the completeness and comprehensiveness of the Six Step Process. Product managers, product marketing managers, pricing managers and other are looking for point solution. To ensure the price of a single product or service is right. For those, we created a new company and a new service. PriceBeam and pricebeam.com.
In PriceBeam, we take the Six Step Process, focusing it and express it as an easy to use serve-yourself SaaS software (with human quality control). Now it is possible to accurately assess the right price for a product or service for an affordable $4,995 without market segmentation or $9,995 with market segmentation.
Our hopes and expectations with PriceBeam are that many more companies and organizations can price their products or service better. That for a very affordable cost can verify that they will not leave money on the table and they are not overpricing. A genuine alternative to guesses, gut feel, cost plus or market price.
