Preventing Summer Car Accidents

Preventing Summer Car Accidents

Most personal injury attorneys will tell you that traffic accidents spike during the summer months. This is attributed to various factors, including warm weather, school holidays, and increased construction.?

The higher number of people on the road during this time significantly raises the risk of being in an accident. It's not just cars you need to be cautious of–the summer season also brings more motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists onto the streets.?

Given that California is the most populated state in the U.S., it led the nation with the most summertime fatal accidents (1,035 ) in 2022.?

Here is what to watch out for this summer:?

Teen Drivers?

According to AAA , 31% of fatal car crashes involving teens happen between Memorial Day and Labor Day, known as the “100 Deadliest Days.”?

Distractions, whether it be texting and driving or talking with passengers, are one of the leading causes of teen car accidents. Seatbelt use also plays a factor in determining injuries. Nearly 50% of teens were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.?

If you are a parent of a teen, remind them of safe driving behaviors, including following the speed limit, limiting distractions, and riding within their comfort zone.?

Excessive Heat

You may have already noticed an increase in heat warnings, with temperatures in certain parts of California reaching record highs. Over this past weekend, Palm Springs hit an all-time peak of 124F.?

Be aware that a car may overheat due to a faulty water pump, a leak in the cooling system, a bad radiator, or low engine oil. Stay up-to-date with maintenance to prevent your car from overheating.

Visibility

This summer, expect more bicyclists and motorcyclists on the road. If you drive a car, be extra cautious and always check your blind spots and mirrors. Reduce speed if you are in a busy area, and treat bicyclists and motorcyclists like any other drivers by maintaining a safe distance.

As a bicyclist or motorcyclist, remember that most traffic laws apply to you, too. Obey traffic lights and signs and watch your speed. Bicyclists should use the bike lane when available and watch for turning vehicles and parked cars.?

Drowsy Driving

Many families take road trips during the summer, which can mean long hours on the road. Nearly 700 deaths from fatigued driving-related crashes in 2022 highlight the severe risks associated with this behavior.?

Operating a vehicle when tired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. In fact, being awake for 20 hours impairs your driving ability as much as having a blood alcohol content of 0.1%.?

If you plan on driving long distances, get a good night’s sleep, take frequent breaks, and avoid taking certain medications that can cause drowsiness.?

Be safe, be cautious, and have a great summer! ???
