Preventing job resignation, a new way to listen, 5 new KNOCK workshops, & an online course for career changers

Are you tired of hearing about 'The Great Resignation'? You may find yourself tuning it out because we are hearing, seeing, and experiencing it so much. Perhaps we're even feeling fatigued talking about who's leaving and why. But, this weekend, I tuned into the WorkLife podcast by Adam Grant, and one new takeaway I'd like to mention is: we should shift our focus to how to get ahead of resignation and make sure employees feel heard and their needs are being met, rather than trying to do damage control after the fact.

Preventing Job Resignation: Get to Know the 'Stay Interview'

In the podcast episode, there were interviews with leaders and employees who felt the sting, increasing workload, and stifled morale resulting from this wave of empowerment and people seeking better opportunities. What if there was a way to prevent resignation and get ahead of it? I learned about a 'Stay Interview', designed as a meeting with high performers to uncover what's missing for them, what would compel or has compelled them to stay, and what would tempt them to leave. Critical to 'stay interview' success is employees being open and honest, and employers and leaders truly listening and taking action on what you hear to improve work for your workforce.

Check out this article on Stay Interviews with questions to make it a fruitful meeting with your team members and colleagues.

What's Really Happening with Resignations?

It's incredible to see the 'separation rates' - or the rates at which employees have separated with their jobs or employers - over the past several years, and by industry. George Anders, Senior Editor at Large @ Linkedin, breaks it down for us.

What if Now Really is The Time to Make a Career Change?

Perhaps one of the reasons for this wave of resignations is that people now feel more comfortable and assured by seeing others making career changes and ending up with more of what they want. Before pursuing a career change (which can take more effort and require rebuilding your personal brand and network in a new company or work environment), I'm a big proponent of 'job crafting', or finding new ways to shape your role to fit your strengths and pursue your goals. However, sometimes there's only so much 'job crafting' you can do before you're delving into an entirely new area of focus or work interest. And, with so much movement in the job market, there are new opportunities to explore your true passion, sign up for a class or learn new skills to finally make that dream job a reality, or go do what you've always felt destined to do when the time is right.

That's why I just launched my *NEW* first online course, beginning May 25th, featuring The Knock Method?: 5 Steps to Building High Quality Career Relationships, for people looking to make the RIGHT career change.

Building new connections in the industry you're pursuing, finding out which roles might be right for you by talking to people with different titles, or having a coffee chat with a mentor or friend of a friend who can lend advice can help you set direction, gather information, and build confidence as you make a career or job change. In this course, you'll:

  • Learn how to apply The Knock Method framework
  • Identify a new career contact you want to reach out to that can help with your career change, and actually open the door, hopefully connecting by the end of the 4 weeks!
  • Learn in a supportive environment with other potential career changers and grow your network by sharing introductions with your cohort-mates
  • Hear from guest speakers on hiring trends and others who made a successful career change for extra inspiration.
  • Receive a signed copy of KNOCK with 10 career development tools you can use at any stage of your career.

*REGISTER FOR EARLY BIRD PRICING BY MAY 10.*

A New Way to Listen

What's one way to connect more deeply with your employees, clients, managers, colleagues, interns, mentors, mentees, or career contacts? Try "Generative Listening", which I learned about from Edi Pasalis. The key concepts of this growth-mindset approach to listening are:

  1. Change the context and think bigger by considering how the person you are listening to, and you, are a part of a bigger team, community, and world. Think beyond you and I, to "us".
  2. Shift what we're listening for - focus on possibilities, rather than trying to change someone's mind

More from The Knock Method?

Looking to build more connection among your work team? Or perhaps you're looking to enhance your career readiness or leadership development programs? I just launched 5 new KNOCK workshops, with a total of 6 career development and job search/career readiness workshops available for Early Career, Mid-Career, and Emerging Leadership and Leadership Level! Reach out about hosting a KNOCK workshop to foster collaboration, and empower your team to take the steps to cultivate deep connection even in a hybrid working world to boost morale and recenter on human connection at work.

Don't forget...it's graduation season! Know an upcoming or recent grad and need a gift? KNOCK is packed with easy-to-implement strategies and tools for graduates to stand out and start their careers ahead of the game.
