Preventing Infection - small actions with massive consequence

Preventing Infection - small actions with massive consequence

As healthcare professionals, we all know the importance of keeping our patients safe, but sometimes the small things make the biggest difference. One of those small yet crucial tasks is properly disinfecting injection ports before administering medication.

Research has highlighted a concerning issue: up to 50% of post-insertion catheter-related infections can be traced back to contaminated needleless connectors (NCs). Shockingly, compliance with disinfection protocols can be as low as 10% in some cases

The recommended practice is straightforward—scrub the port with 70% alcohol for at least 5 to 60 seconds. This simple action can significantly reduce infection risks. Using passive alcohol disinfection caps has been shown to cut infection rates by 48-86% and should

But the story doesn't end with injection ports. There are many other small, everyday actions we can take to prevent infections:

  1. Hand Hygiene: Proper handwashing or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers before and after patient contact is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections. It's a simple act that can profoundly impact patient safety.
  2. Sterile Technique: Whether it's during dressing changes or inserting catheters, maintaining a sterile field is essential. Every step taken to avoid contamination counts, from wearing gloves to using sterile drapes.
  3. Proper Glove Use: Wearing gloves is a basic practice, but it's crucial to change them between tasks and procedures to avoid cross-contamination. Remember, gloves are not a substitute for hand hygiene.
  4. Environmental Cleaning: Regular cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces in patient care areas, including high-touch surfaces like bed rails, doorknobs, and medical equipment, are vital. Effective environmental cleaning reduces the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
  5. Patient Education: Educating patients and their families about infection prevention, including proper hand hygiene and the importance of keeping dressings clean and dry, empowers them to be active participants in their own care.

We owe it to our patients to follow these protocols diligently. Proper disinfection and adherence to basic infection prevention measures are not just routine tasks; they're critical steps in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and ensuring the best outcomes for those we care for.

Let's commit to making proper injection port disinfection and other infection prevention practices non-negotiable parts of our daily routines. Together, we can reduce infections and enhance patient safety.
