Dear Pretty-Minded,

Welcome back to Pretty Minds Collective, the creative corner where cognition and creativity meet. In today’s edition, we’re diving into a concept that shapes everything from our daily decisions to long-term goals: mindset. We’ll explore how to shift from scarcity thinking—marked by constraints and limitations—to abundance thinking, where opportunities and infinite possibilities abound.

Top of Mind: Curating Mental Aesthetics

Our brains are buzzing with an estimated 60,000 thoughts a day—that's about 42 thoughts per minute! Yet, left to their own devices, studies suggest that up to 80% of these thoughts are negative for most people. If our minds are the architects of our reality, how do we design a blueprint for abundant, possibility-rich thinking or what I like to call richtivities?

Mental aesthetics refers to the intentional cultivation of a clear, harmonious, and inspiring inner mental environment to optimize thought processes, creativity, and emotional well-being. It is the art and science of designing one's mental landscape—through practices, habits, and inputs—that promotes clarity, focus, balance, and positivity, enabling a more intentional, productive, and fulfilling thought life.

Key Components of Mental Aesthetics

  1. Clarity: The Foundation of Thought. Clarity allows for better prioritization, sharper focus, and increased self-awareness. Strategy: Practice daily mental decluttering. Spend 5 minutes writing down worries, doubts, or cluttering thoughts to externalize them. This process enhances your ability to approach problems with a clear mind. Removing mental clutter and fostering simplicity in thought to create space for focus and creativity.
  2. Balance: Harmonizing Logic and Emotion. A balanced mental environment integrates emotional insights with logical reasoning, promoting thoughtful action over reactive behavior. Strategy: Use reflective journaling to analyze situations from both emotional and logical standpoints, reducing mental and emotional overwhelm. This dual perspective can help reduce impulsive decisions and cultivate emotional intelligence.
  3. Flow: Facilitating Seamless Thought Processing. Just as physical spaces benefit from intuitive layouts, your mind thrives on mental pathways that promote uninterrupted focus. Strategy: Identify your peak productivity periods and schedule cognitively demanding tasks during For me, flow state is between 6 am and 12pm. Operating from flow state, ensures thoughts progress smoothly and intuitively, supporting productive and creative thinking.
  4. Inspiration: Fueling Motivation and Growth. Inspiration activates the brain’s reward pathways, fostering curiosity and drive—both critical for self-mastery. Strategy: Surround yourself with enriching inputs like books, podcasts, or discussions that align with your growth goals. Create a “mental vision board” by visualizing your aspirations regularly.Filling the mental space with uplifting and motivating inputs to fuel growth and innovation.

Action Steps:

  1. Declutter Regularly: Weed out thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve you.
  2. Set Thinking Rituals: Schedule intentional and optimal times for creative, strategic, or reflective thinking.
  3. Curate Inputs: Choose the books, media, and conversations that align with your goals and higher level thinking.
  4. Visualize Your Ideal Mind: Use visualization or meditation to create a mental "blueprint" for abundant thinking.

Learning + Unlearning: Building a Resilient Mental Framework

Learn:

  1. Mind Mapping for Growth: Write down your thoughts, goals, and opportunities visually to see connections.
  2. Thought Processing Protocol:

  • Capture: Document thoughts as they arise. Use your phone, voice notes, pen and paper or an app like Otter.ai for quick note taking.
  • Categorize: Sort actionable vs. non-actionable ideas. Prioritize your ideas to void overwhelm.
  • Challenge: Reframe limiting beliefs. Turn doubts into affirmations of possibility.

3. Daily Abundance Practice: Start each day by acknowledging three resources you have in abundance.

Unlearn:

  1. The Illusion of Thought Control: You can't control every thought, but you can manage how you respond.
  2. Scarcity Reflexes: Pause when you instinctively think, “I can’t” or “There’s not enough.”
  3. Mental Hoarding: Let go of outdated ideas. Your brain, like your closet, thrives on space. Focus on what's next and what could be.

Food for Thought: The Mental Operating System | Scarcity vs. Abundance: Two Competing Frameworks

Think of your mindset as your brain’s operating system, dictating the flow and function of your thoughts. Your brain's OS. A scarcity mindset operates on “not enough”—whether it’s time, money, resources, or ideas. Meanwhile, an abundance mindset thrives on the belief in infinite opportunities.

Here’s a snapshot of how each mindset manifests in day-to-day life:

Symptoms of Scarcity Thinking:

  • Constant comparison
  • Binary, “either/or” thinking
  • Fear-driven decision-making
  • Reluctance to share resources
  • Obsession with limitations

Features of Abundance Thinking:

  • Expansive, “both/and” perspectives
  • Opportunity-oriented focus
  • Collaborative problem-solving
  • Solution-seeking over constraint-dwelling
  • Optimism about what's possible
