Pressures, Who decides and how much is enough?
Ask a craniosacral therapist, and you will hear the reasons why 5 grams of pressure is sufficient. Ask a deep-tissue therapist, and you will hear reasons why intense pressure is needed to access...stuff.
Ask one patient, and they may tell you that they prefer deeper (or lighter pressures and respond best to that pressure.
But, what if the therapist's belief does not align with the views or expectations of the patient? Might positive results be less about the "proper" pressure and more based on an alignment of patient expectations and values? It's often hard for us to let go of what we've been taught, in terms of proper pressures for specific conditions. It gets even harder to consider a change when we've had success applying those prescribed pressures.
How about if you practice the process of negotiation with your patients? Might the two of you come up with a mutually agreeable level of pressure to allow them to feel listened to and you to feel validated?
